2002-2004 Concert Band Contest Literature List
Is currently being revised. It will be available by September 1, 2002
OBDA makes this list available for use with the "OMEA Large Group High School League, District, or Invitational Contest Format" which is published in the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) Handbook. It is also available from OMEA President Dave Becker.
Required Use. Classification shall be based upon the use of the required list for festivals and contests. Schools may enter any classification level regardless of enrollment or OSAA classification, but should not play in a class below their OSAA classification in a competitive (ranked) contest. Bands participating in, or attempting to qualify for the OSAA High School Concert Band Championship must play from the list for their OSAA classification, or may play from a higher classification's list. Bands only need to program one selection from the list to fulfill this requirement. Schools playing for ratings or critique only may choose their selection from any classification.
Content. This list has been revised based on input from over one hundred band directors who participated in the 2001 and 2002 Band Literature Workshops held at Lewis and Clark College. Additions include compositions which regularly appear on selective music lists around the country, such as the National Band Association List, and new literature that workshop participants felt was worthy of inclusion. The number following the title refers to the year each composition was added to the list. Titles normally remain on the list for 4-5 years. An asterisk* indicates selections out of print.
The Oregon list is purposely kept rather short, to encourage exploration of new composers and compositions. Because of this, many "standard" band compositions are routinely rotated off the list each revision period. Titles from previous years may be used without a request to substitute.
Substitutions. Directors wishing to substitute a composition which has not appeared on the current or past list, may submit a written request to the contest chairman of the event at which they intend to perform. The contest chairman will rule on the suitability and level of difficulty of the composition, or may defer to the State Band Contest Chair or Literature List Chair.
Groups who wish to qualify for the OSAA State Band Contest must have title substitutions approved in writing by:
David M. Becker or
