Jane Atkinson is a cultural anthropologist with
interests in ritual, politics, and history in Southeast
Asia. She conducted the first long-term ethnographic
research with the Wana in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, since
the Dutch colonial period. Her work resulted in a series of
articles; an edited collection of essays, Power and
Difference: Gender in Island Southeast Asia and a book, The
Art and Politics of Wana Shamanship, co-edited with Shelly
Errington. She speaks Bahasa Indonesia and Taa, a Central
Celeban language. She is presently serving as the Dean of
the College of Arts and Sciences, and is do-director of the
Asian Studies Collaboration Project funded by the Ford
Foundation.
