Andrew Bernstein, professor of Japanese history, is the author of a translation of D.T. Suzuki's work on Emanuel Swedenborg and is currently writing about the modernization of death practices in Japan since the mid-nineteenth century. His research interests are eclectic but tend to pivot on the basic question, "What makes the modern world 'modern'?" Born and raised in New York, Andrew attended Amherst College and earned his Ph.D. at Columbia University. Before entering graduate school, he also worked for several years in Tokyo as a correspondent for a financial news wire.
