Tamara Perkins' main research interests focus upon transformations in mainland China since the advent of market reforms in the late 1970s, especially the question of socioeconomic inequality among different segments of the population. When she has her sociological hat on, her subfield interests include economic sociology, women in development, inequality and methodology. Just recently , Prof. Perkins began a collaborative project on the emerging credit card industry in urban China in hopes of understanding both its institutional and cultural underpinnings. She has lived, worked and studied in China for more than six years, one year of which was spent living and working in several villages in a township in southern Tianjin Municipality.
