Bruce Suttmeier specializes in modern Japanese literature, specifically works of the 1960s. His research at Stanford University, "Seeing Past Destruction: War, Memory and Visuality in 1960s Japanese fiction," examines issues of trauma and memory in representations of World War II. He teaches various levels of Japanese language, as well as classes on pre-modern and modern Japanese literature
