Vera Allain - Economics '93 Vera is Research Officer for the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, Basseterre, St. Kitts. She received her MSC Development Studies from the London School of Economics and worked as an economist at the St. Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority. Of her Economics experience at L&C she writes, "Yes (it was valuable) - it is now my profession. For my current job my international economics, development economics and international relations courses were the most useful and econometrics." She belongs to the American Association of Economists.

Anas Al Otayba, Business '98 Anas is currently living and working in the United Arab Emirates. He is the Human Resource Manager for the Zakum Development Company (ZADCO). He is married and has two daughters (Najia and Mariam). He also volunteers as an office manager for the UAE Red Crescent/International Relations Department.

Matthew Artz -- Economics '97 After graduating from Lewis & Clark College, Matt attended Graduate School at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received his Masters of Human Resources and Industrial Relations in 1998. He married Julie in the Fall of 1998.
Matt has been with Sun Microsystems in Broomfield, Colorado for the past two and a half years. He has been working as an HRIS Specialist, HR Programs Manager, and Compensation Analyst. Matt and Julie will be relocating to the Camberley, UK Office beginning July 2001 where he will be an International Compensation Analyst to the Europe, Middle East, and Africa Enterprise Serives Division for Sun Microsystems.
Justin is currently enjoying a successful career in baseball with the Anaheim Angels. He has spent the last two years, however, recovering from a borken leg and re-establishing himself as a major league player. When he left Lewis & Clark College in 1996 to pursue his career in baseball, he was one course short of graduation. He has returned and will, at the end of May, graduate with his degree in business.
In September 2001, Jo was recognized by the local Realtor association as an "Achiever." The Achiever Spotlight program acknowledged Realtor members who have demonstrated the spirit of federal, state and local fair housing laws while providing exceptional service to clientele, the Realtor organization and the real estate profession.
As a member and past Chair of the association's Equal Opportunity/Cultural Diversity Committee, Jo spearheaded the design of Fair Housing Educational Forums, assuming the lead role in implementation of a program aimed at educating members on market diversity. She took an active role in developing the association's Minority Scholarship Program. Jo was also instrumental in drafting a partnership agreement between HUD and the Oregon Association of Realtors. Ironically, Jo also introduced the very idea of the Achiever Spotlight program, helping to identify previous recipients and recognizing them before the association at quarterly luncheons. Additionally, Jo serves on the associations Board of Directors.

George J. Cannelos - Business '69 George is the Presdient/Chief Operating Officer at Pfeffer Bettis, Inc. in Anchorage, Alaska. He earned his Masters Degree in Regional Planning at the University of Pennsylvania in 1975.

Ruth is an International Trade Manager with the Oregon Department of Agriculture.
After more than 20 years with Standard Insurance, he took some time off to raise more than $1 million for a small, local non-profit organization serving youth. Now, in the middle of Oregon's most recent malpractice crisis, he serves the needs of physicians, medical groups and clinics throughout the Portland area. He is the proud parent of two college graduates and a West Linn High School sophomore.

Richard is Emeritus Professor (1988) from the University of Nevada, Reno, and also retired from the University of Oregon 1995. He received his MS in 1963 in International Business, and his Ph.D. in Finance and Business Economics in 1965, both from the University of Oregon. Richard's wife is Carolyn and they have two children, Catherine (20) and David (19 in 1998). Kathryn Downing - Economics '73
Kathryn Downing was the subject of a feature article in the Spring 1999 issue of the Lewis & Clark College Chronicle. Last March, Downing was named president and chief executive officer of The Los Angeles Times. Excerpts from Jean Kemp-Ware's article:
"During her days as a Lewis & Clark student majoring in economics, Downing never imagined being president and chief executive officer of the second-largest metropolitan daily in the nation. 'I assumed I would end up with my Ph.D. in economics,' she states. "G.H. Mattersdorff, professor emeritus of economics was the person 'who was most encouraging to me,' Downing recalls. 'When someone reaches out and takes an interest in you, it makes such a difference.' ... "Throughout her career, Downing has made good use of her economics and law degrees. 'Law school is wonderful training for business because it teaches you how to look at issues from a variety of sides, how to argue and understand each of the issues, and how to identify issues. And I wouldn't trade my economics degree for anything. It gave me the fundamentals to understand how the world works.' "

Kent Hymel - Economics 2001 Kent is currently (Feb. 2008) a Ph.D. student at the University of California-Irvine. His fields of concentration are urban economics, transportation economics and applied econometrics. After graduating from LC, he worked for three years for the Oregon Department of Revenue as a research analyst before moving forward to graduate school. In August 2007, he married Julia Boehm (Class of 2004) in Portland, Oregon. They both currently reside in Irvine, California.

Carter Keltner - Economics '91 Carter was taking intensive language classes and working part-time teaching English in 1996. At that time he was planning on attending Thunderbird International Business School. He has been traveling and teaching throughout Asia for the last five years. Carter taught English in Vietnam and traveled in Cambodia, China, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, The Philippines, Hong Kong and Singapore. Carter said he got "an excellent overview of the amazing economic growth that is taking place in that area, but the poor environment!! There's an interesting balance between being a capitalist and an environmentalist - I aspire to find it!" He was studying Japanese and planned on studying Chinese also.

Donovan King - Economics '81 Donovan is a Labor Economist for AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees). He received his MA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1985, majoring in Industrial Relations. He finished his Ph.D. coursework at Cornell before leaving in 1989. He said his experience at L&C was good preparation for grad school and job. Most useful courses: Marty's Labor Econ and Radical Political Econ; Accounting; Stats. Donovan married Diane Landry in May 1995. Their first child Christina Ruby King was born March 16, 1996. Donovan belongs to the Industrial Relations Research Association.
Valerie J. King - Business '82 Valerie is with the University of North Carolina Clinical Scholars Program. She received her MD in 1991 and Residency Family Medicine 1994 from the University of North Carolina. In 1996 Valerie was in a postdoctoral fellowship program and obtaining and MPA. She writes, "statistics has come in useful in getting my Epidemiology Degree." Valerie belongs to the Society of Teachers and Family Medicine, Association of Childbearing Centers, and American Academy of Family Practice.
Bryan Kipp - Business '87 Bryan is a Direct Mail/Catalog manager at Meier & Frank. He is a member of the Portland Advertising Federation and served on the Board of Directors in 1993-94. He writes that his undergraduate economics background has taught him that, "a thorough understanding in economics is essential for a leadership position in Corporate America." Bryan volunteers his time to the S.M.A.R.T. program.

Ben K. Kreisher-Business '52 Ben is retired but is the President of Kreisher Enterprises, Inc. He went to 1 1/2 years of Wharton's Graduate School at the University of Pennsylvania. He is married to Patricia M. Kreisher and has a daughter, Cheryl A. Kreisher. He writes that his undergraduate economics background has, "afforded me to find employment as an accountant for the past 30 years, own a video business, and helped me become a Network Marketer." Pavel Krumkachev - Business '97 1997 business graduate, as an entrepreneur is managing an interactive marketing company: Visual Flow Inc. We highly recommend him. Pavel was the president of Delta Mu Delta, the business honors society. Pavel also was SAAB tutor for business and economics for two years and was the SAAB representative for the department Fall semester 1996.
Kim M. Kruse-Business '78 Kim is a Natural Resource Manager for the State of Alaska's Department of Natural Resources. She has continued her studies of the Croatian and German languages and volunteers her times as a translator for foreign visitors. She writes that her undergraduate economics background has helped her in "understanding current economic events and interest rates."
David LaFrance - Economics '86 David is the Director of Finance for Denver Water. He received his MBA from the University of Colorado in 1992. David married Justine Miani (L&C class '86-math), and they have a daughter Sierra (now 8 in 2000) and son Devon (now 6 in 2000). He belongs to the American Water Works Association, and is Chair of the Rates and Charges Subcommitte. He is also an instructor for the AWWA Financial Planning: Cost of Service Rate Setting Seminar.

Wes Lawrence - Economics '81 Wes is Vice President and Division Manager for Key Bank of Oregon. He went to Pacific Coast Banking School at the University of Washington. Noa S. Lidstone-Business '93 Noa is a Superintendent with Matson Terminals, Inc. which allows him to travel internationally once a month to Micronesia. He married Leinani Buchanan, also of the class of '93. He writes that his undergraduate economics background helps him in his career and life and that "Econ 101 was most valuable , it was general and applies to my everyday work." Noa is associated with Special Olympics and the United Way.
Keith Edward Lindner-Business '81 Keith is a President and C.O.O. of Chiquita Brands Intl. He writes that his undergraduate economic background has taught him "the language of business from technical courses like accounting, investments, taxes, etc." His outside associations are mostly related to his Christian faith.

Arusi has been a Deputy District Attorney with the Multnomah count District Attorney's Office since March 2007. Arusi has served on the Board of Directors of Greater Oregon Chapter of the March of Dimes.

Todd R. Lovell-Business '81 Todd is a Senior Vice President at Rogen MacKenzie Inc. He has a wife, Arlene and children, Zachary and Allison. He writes of his economic background that, "we manage clients investments--we use economics forecasts, etc. daily." He belongs to 3 nonprofit organizations that are not business related.
Thomas H. Maass-Business '61 Thomas continued his education in civil engineering and construction programming and management. He was an officer in corps and engineering and served 27 years in the USAF as a commissioned officer. He is now retired. He is married and has a son, Thomas, Jr. and a daughter, Marlene Peters. He writes, "After retiring from the USAF in June, 1967, I went into dental equipment and supplies manufacturing from where I retired in 1989 as chairman. Yes, my economics studies helped me."
James E. Mallicoat - Economics '50 James is retired U.S. Navy 1980 (Lt. USNA), and retired from the U.S. Dept. of the Interior (Bonneville Power Administration) in 1971 where he was the head of the organization, methods and procedures staff.
Penny Malloy-Business '84 Penny is the Western Zone vice-president of Sales for Sony Electronics and has taken many courses in AMA sales and management skill sets as well as presentation & public speaking courses. She is married to Glenn Malloy and they have a daughter McKenna, 8 months. She writes that her undergraduate economic background has helped her to "understand marketing trends and cycles, analysis of numbers and data, etc." She is a board member of the League of San Jose and is associated with the Mission Springs Community Church and the American Cancer Society.
Ronald Manhire-Business '68 Ronald is a Senior Systems Design Analyst at United Airlines after earning his programming certificate from Electronic Computer Programming Institute in 1971. He is married to Janne Foster (LC '69) and has a son, Gregory and daughter, Lisa. He is now affiliated with various church committees and is a Church Deacon as well as the PTSA (PTA).
Rodney D. Mann - Economics '79 Rodney is Senior Manager of Ernst & Young LLP. He earned MS of Management from the Sloan School of Management at MIT in 1987. He writes that macro, micro, stats all helped me better understand how corporations work and how the economy effects them.
After graduating from Lewis & Clark College, he received his M. Sci. in economics from the University of Oregon in 1982. He was then employed with the Central Intelligence Agency for 16 years as a senior intelligence advisor for Senators Dole and Lott in the US Senate.
He lives in Washington, D.C. and has been married for 20 years.
Pat Markham-Business '72 Pat is the President of Brooke Communications, Inc. He has a wife, Connie and a daughter, Brooke. Pat writes that all accounting and statistical courses he took at LC have helped him in his career and in life.
Pamela Marsden-Maier-Business '89 Pamela is now a Business English teacher in Germany. She has a husband, Hubert, and children, Tashina, 5, Tamara, 2 1/2, and Tristan, 6 months. She writes that her undergraduate economics background has "given me the background I need to be able to teach Business English to learners of English."
Edgar B. Martin - Economics '62 Edgar is President and CEO of Commercial Bank. He graduated from Pacific Coast Banking School in 1973. His wife is Gloria, class of 1962. They have three children in their 20s who have all graduated or are attending graduate schools. Edgar is a board member of the Salem YMCA. Other associations include United Way, Salem Economic Development Corporation and Network of Oregon Affordable Housing.
Jim Mason-Business '87 Jim is a Project Engineer with Taylor International. He has a wife, Gwen (Lyttle) Mason ('87) and daughters, Rachel, 2 1/2 and Shlelby, 1 1/2. He writes that economics has helped him in decision making, business policy, accounting and computers.
Pamela Massey-Business '80 Pamela is a Sales Executive with Digital Equipment Co. She received her MBA at Portland State in 1983. She is married to Lee Ray Massey who is a Worldwide LaserJet Marketing Manager for Hewlett-Packard and has 2 children, Erik, 14 1/2, and Blaine, 4 1/2. She is associated with Ikebana International, Boise Garden Club, and the Boise Philharmonic.
Candace Maynard (Stump)-Economics 2000 After working six years in the new media industry, Candace is now doing an important work as a full time Mother to 8 month old Morgan, and (nearly) three year old Julian. Her husband, Barry Stump, also an LC grad in Computer Science, works as a software engineer for a game developer. They are currently living in California's North Bay Area. She has begun work on her first book. Look for it on the best sellers list soon!
Archie W. McCrae-Business '49 Archie is now retired after being a Business Manager for 2 school districts for 17 years. His son, Bill, is a financial officer for Groodman Co.
Jim McFarland-Business '57 Jim is a Vice President at the Oracle Corporation. He was a Two-Star Admiral for the U.S. Navy. Jim has a wife, Paula. He is associated with military and professional business organizations.
Scott McPherson - Business -92 Scott, upon graduating from Lewis & Clark College, has his Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of Portland. He served as the General Sales Manager until his recent promotion to Director of Marketing for Core-Mark. Scott has a lot of experience in management as well as in retail operations.
Tony Michaelson-Business '62 Tony received a Bachelors Degree in International Management from the American Graduate School of International Management in 1965 and is now a Senior Associate with the Edge Learning Institute. He has a wife, Margo, and children, Tyler,17, and Kim, 15. His is associated with Rotary and Gig Harbor High School Sports Boosters.
Andrew H. Melczer - Economics '76 Andrew is Vice President of Health Policy Research at Illinois State Medical Society. He earned his Ph.D. in economics from Northwestern University. Of his economics experience at L&C he writes, "understanding how incentives make people act and react is a key lesson of economics which is central to much of my work."
Susan Woolley Melczer - Economics '76 Susan married Andrew (above). She is Director of Financial Services at the Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council. She earned her Masters of Management from the J. L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University (hospital and health services management and marketing) in 1981. Susan and Andrew married in 1977. They have three children. Susan belongs to Healthcare Financial Management Association, is involved with Girl Scouts and PTA.
Donna Montee-Business '81 Donna is an Executive Director with USTA/Pacific Northwest. She earned an Outstanding Nonprofit Certificate student award from the Nonprofit Program in Public Administration. She has a husband, Jeff who is a Vice President at Hoffman Industries, and a daughter Kelly who recently graduated with a BA of Business from the University of Puget Sound, and a son, Kevin who is stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army. She is associated with the Center for Performing arts, and is an Entrepreneur Volunteer.

John Montgomery-Business '53 John received his Master of Christian Leadership from the Western Conservative Baptist Seminary in '83 and is an Accounting Officer with Linn County. he has a wife, Jan and a son, Scott who is now in Venezuela. Marsha Morasch-Business '75 Marsha is a Partner at Smith, Freed, Heald and Clark Attorneys. She attended law school at NW School of Law. She married Steve Morasch before her senior year at LC and now has 3 children, one of whom is heading off to the University of Oregon with desires to be a doctor. Steven Morasch-Business '75 Steven went on to become a CPA and now works for Morasch Meats. He has a wife, Marsha, and 3 children. He writes that his undergraduate economics background has helped him develop a general style of thinking through problems. He is associated with OSCPA.

He has a wife, Suzette and a 2 year old son named Spencer. Until recently, Jeff had been working and living in Memphis, Tennessee as the Plant Controller for the Coors Memphis Brewery.
Aaron Moszer - Business Administration '97 Aaron is currently living and working in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is the Vice President of Marketing Services to the Las Vegas 51's, an AAA afiliate to the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team. He is engaged to April Nielsen, a 1999 Lewis & Clark graduate in Business Administration. They plan to be married in Fall 2001.

Matthew D. Murphy-Business '83 Matthew is a Superintendent of Neighbor Island Operations Co., Inc. He is considering attending Hawaii Pacific University to get his MBA. He is currently also planning a wedding to Cindy Ignacio. He says that his undergraduate economics work "gave me the discipline to see things through and knowledge of many topics. David Officer-Business '85 After receiving his MBA from the University of Washington in 1989, David is now the Senior Manager of Human Resources for T-Mobile. He is responsible for the company's Recruiting/hiring programs. The responsibilities include new call center development, placement, and staffing. He has 45 recruiters working nationwide to ensure T-Mobile's customer service is fully staffed. He has also acquired a SPHR (Senior Professional Human Resources) certification and teaches this program for Human Resource Professional in Salem and at times in Portland. He is an executive member and Chair of Communication Committee for Oregon Work Force Investment Board.

Justin H. Phillips - Economics '98 Justin is currently working as a Management Analyst at the U.S. Department of Justice, Justice Management Division. He works as an internal consultant, currently on an ongoing project that encourages the sharing of resource allocation information between the various law enforcement components of the Department of Justice (i.e., FBI, DEA, INS, Bureau of Prisons, U.S. Marshals' Service, the Criminal Division, the U.S. Attorneys and the Executive Office of Immigration Review. Among his other projects: an assessment of the extent of the crime committed by illegal and legal immigrants and a study on management of the special assignment reserve fund at the U.S. Marshals' Service.
Justin's senior thesis from 1998 "The Impact of Portland's Urban Growth Boundary on Metropolitan Housing Process: A Theoretical and Empirical Analysis" won the best undergraduate paper award from the Pacific Northwest Regional Economic Conference in 1999.
This is the second year in a row that a Lewis & Clark College economics major has won the prize. In 1998 the award was won by Jacob Chatters - Economics '97 for his thesis, "Dreams and Despair: The Economics of the Next National Hockey League Expansion."
Mary Pickert-Business '84 Mary is a Development Associate with Two Oceans Entertainment. She earned her certificate in film making at New York University, School of Continuing Education. Scott Pillar-Business '89 Scott is the Managing Director of the Greycoast Consulting Group, a professional and technical search firm headquartered in San Francisco with clients nationwide. Scott has been actively involved with a number of searches and manages the technical recruiting side of the company. He is also currently active in many educational related causes in Central Oregon serving as a Board Member for the Crook-Deschutes Educational Service District. His wife, Sally Taylor, whom he married in 1996, and two step-daughters, Amy and Molly, make their home in Sisters and keep in touch with a number of classmates and the occasional professor(s).

Luisa Quinoy - Economics '98 Luisa works for American Water Works International and is the Direcgor of International Sales. She recently worked on two large waterline projects in Afghanistan, as well as had several bids for the reconstruction of Iraq. In the last three years, Luisa's job has taken her to Canada, Portugal, the Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, Panama and Costs Rica. This year, Luisa plans to travel to Guam, Ecuador, El Salvador Peru and Venezuela.
Luisa lives in Portland and collaborates with a local band called, "Pink Martini" and teaches them Spanish. She is currently writing a song for their next album with pianist and band leader.
Bill Qutub - Economics '90 Bill belongs to various healthcare organizations, and received his MPH and MBA from Columbia University in 1995. He is a MD candidate. He is associated with the American Medical Student Association, American College of HealthCare Executives and Columbia MBA Interviewer.
Now in office, Sagala's days are hectic and full. Although they are long, the workdays don't quell his evident passion for helping to develop the country's infrastructure as well as pointing society towards a meritocracy that rewards hard work and achievement. "I'm quite determined to stay in parliament..." Sagala is quoted as saying, "until I have achieved some of these things."
Ian Rea - Economics '99 Ian is currently working for Charles Schwab & Co in Gaithersburg, Maryland as an investment advisor. He had in recent past worked for Thomson Financial in Rockville, Maryland as a financial analyst.
Mr. Reed founded a consulting firm, LFC Reed and Associates, Ltd., in 1971 that operated in over 30 countries. In 1980 he moved to the Canadian Forest Service in Ottawa as Assistant Deputy Minister and oversaw the reorganization of the agency and a series of new policy initiatives that included Forest Resource Development Agreements with the ten provinces, a substantial expansion of the Canadian capacity in forestry science, cooperative agreements with China and other countries, and a major increase in the national fire detection and suppression capability. In 1984, he moved to a funded chair in forest policy in the Forestry Faculty at the Univ. of British Columbia, as Senior Industrial Research Professor, from which he retired in 1992 as Professor Emeritus. He resumed consulting at that time.
He recently completed an archival study titled: “Two Centuries of Softwood Lumber War Between Canada and the United Sates – A Chronicle of Trade Barriers Viewed in the Context of Saw Timber Depletion.” The review can be viewed on the website of The Free Trade Lumber Council.

Patti calls to tell us that she and her husband, John (who attended the Northwestern School of Law) are expecting their second child on or about January 1st, 2000. Patty says: I have been enjoying being a mom! Patti and John live in Fallbrook California (in San Diego County) where John works as a helicopter pilot in the Marine Corps.
