""Give Us Your Poor, Your Tired, Your Huddled Masses Longing to be Free-The Economics and Policy of Immigration to the U.S.

Dr. Giovanni Peri
Professor of Economics
University of California - Davis

Abstract

The topic of immigration, particularly of less educated low-skilled workers, is a political hot button in rich countries. This issue is increasingly relevant for the US and other rich countries, as economies become more integrated, rich country populations are aging and income differences across countries are often increasing. Most economists would agree that more international mobility of workers is desirable and its world-wide benefits would be very large. Moreover economists agree that there have been more benefits than costs from immigration to the US and even low educated Americans did not suffer much from immigration. The sentiment of people and politicians, however, is increasingly anti-immigration, not only in the US but in Europe and Japan as well. This lecture provides some facts and insights to understand better the economic impact of immigration in the US, separating facts from myths, trying to understand where the large opposition to immigration comes from and suggesting some policy ideas to advance the debate on immigration.

Dr. Giovanni Peri is an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of California, Davis and a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. He is also a CESifo Research Fellow, a CReAM External Fellow and Associate Editor of "Regional Science and Urban Economics". He also taught in Bocconi University, Milano, the European University Institute in Florecne and UCLA. He does research on Human Capital, Productivity and Labor markets and recently his research was focused on the impact of immigration on the U.s. economy. This research has frequently been featured in the press (New York Times, The Economist, Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal). In the summer of 2007 he received a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Grant for the Study of International Migration. Dr. Peri, born in Italy, holds an undergraduate degree from Bocconi University, Milano and earned his Ph.D. in Economics at UC Berkeley in 1998. He is married and has three children.

The Steinhardt Lecture in Economics is free and open to the general public.
