| Overview Lewis & Clark operates a firewall or gateway between the Internet and our local network to protect the College from malicious computer users and other unwanted computer traffic. We use a firewall to protect the integrity of our network. Many times the traffic is malicious and is meant to break or "hack" into a computer system. A firewall can determine whether the traffic is wanted or not. Policy Statement The Lewis and Clark Internet connection is to be used solely for purposes set forth in the Responsible Use of Technology Resources Policy. As such, the use of the Internet for endeavors not directly related to enhancing and facilitating teaching, learning, and scholarly research should be considered secondary activities. Should such secondary activities in any way interfere with primary activities, they may be terminated immediately. Procedure The Internet is constantly evolving. Applications are being introduced weekly which offer new and exciting Internet services. Unfortunately, every time a new service is introduced, it requires us to change our firewall configuration if we want those programs to operate on our network. If there is a new Internet program that will enrich the academic experience at Lewis & Clark, we encourage you to let Information Technology know. We will then review our Firewall policy and take steps to make that program accessible to the Lewis & Clark community. Please contact the Director of Network and Technical Services at 768-7224 if you would like to use a new Internet program that we do not currently support. |
