Academic Instructional Technology Support

The primary focus of IMS is to provide, maintain and repair instructional technology equipment for use by undergraduate classes on the Lewis & Clark campus. Our Classroom Technology Matrix will show you in which rooms equipment has been permanently installed. We have a limited stock of equipment available for checkout for use in rooms without installed equipment.

Although IMS is not sufficiently staffed to provide labor to set up or operate classroom equipment, we can offer you help in locating a student, staff person or outside vendor for hire, or we will train you to operate the equipment yourself.

Equipment loan

IMS loans equipment at its equipment checkout window by reservation, or on a first come first served basis. Academic instructional support always takes priority over other uses. Please call our checkout window at 503-768-7290 to reserve equipment and schedule a pickup and return time. You may also request equipment by sending e-mail to msdesk@lclark.edu. A web-based request form is available at www.lclark.edu/~msdesk/form.html.

Equipment available for loan includes:

  • mini-DV and VHS camcorders
  • data projectors (aka InFocus projectors for PowerPoint)
  • digital still cameras
  • audio tape recorders
  • cd/cassette players (boomboxes)
  • 35mm slide projectors

Reserve equipment as far in advance as possible, especially for high demand items like our camcorders. Our standard loan period is 24 hours, or over the weekend.

Failure to return equipment on time is likely to deprive other clients of its use, and will result in an immediate fine of $10 per calendar day per piece of equipment. Borrowing privileges are revoked after the third late return.

Non-Classroom event support

Our primary function is to support undergraduate classes. To the extent resources are available, IMS provides limited support for non-classroom classes and events. Contact the IMS director at 503-768-7294 to discuss the level of support we can offer. Please note that we require a minimum of two weeks' notice for any non-classroom event support request.

We assign requests for non-classroom support one of three levels: basic, intermediate, or advanced. Basic support entails setup of one microphone, an overhead projector, or a tv/vcr cart during our regular service window hours (9:00-5:00pm Monday-Friday).

Intermediate support includes setup of more than one piece of traditional av equipment (for example two to four microphones, slide projection, portable sound systems for voice amplification) during our field support hours (8:30am-7:00pm Monday-Friday, and 9:00am-5:00pm Saturday). Intermediate support is subject to availability of equipment and labor. If our resources are unable to provide the support you need, our director can assist in locating contracted labor and/or equipment from an outside vendor. Although IMS is not sufficiently staffed to provide labor to operate equipment, we can offer you help in locating a student, staff person or outside vendor for hire, or train you to operate the equipment yourself.

Advanced support includes setup and/or operation of more complex systems (e.g data/video projection, sound reinforcement for music, video recording, theatrical lighting, five or more microphones, and requests for support outside of our field support hours. Our director will determine if it is possible to utilize our equipment and staff, or if such support must be contracted. Advance planning is extremely important with such events; we require 2+ weeks notice to ensure adequate preparation time. Contact our director at 503-768-7294 for more information.

Suggestions?

We actively solicit requests and suggestions for improvement in instructional technology equipment or systems in rooms on campus, and IMS operations in general. Your suggestions may be discussed at meetings of the Classroom Advisory Committee. Please feel welcome to contact the IMS director at 503-768-7294 with your suggestions, comments or concerns.
