Thunderbird is Here

As many of you already know, the search for new e-mail client software began when the company that made our current software, Mulberry, announced its bankruptcy. Information Technology is pleased to announce the selection of a new recommended e-mail clients for the College, Mozilla’s Thunderbird.

The IT division established a task force to evaluate different options, looking for a solution that would address a list of needed specifications and requirements as well as a solution that worked with our current infrastructure. It became clear to the task force that Thunderbird met the requirements best and fit excellent within our current infrastructure, and emerged as the task force's recommendation. We believe that it is a good program that will serve the needs of the College now and into the future.

Some of the features that we feel make Thunderbird a good fit for the College and an improvement over Mulberry include:

  • All your Mulberry messages and folders are accessible in Thunderbird. (IMAP Compliant)
  • Displays HTML messages and inline graphics.
  • Ability to send e-mail from home without relaying issues.
  • Access to the LC Directory for addressing e-mails on-campus.

If you wish to download and install Thunderbird, click here to download and run the customized LC Installer.

We have written several helpsheets to assist you in getting started with Thunderbird and for transferring addresses and archived mail folders from Mulberry. Our Thunderbird class on June 8th has already filled, so we have scheduled another for June 30th at 10am. If this is not convenient, gather five people and we will work with you to schedule a special class. Contact us at x7020 for more information or to register for the class.

We will continue to support use of Mulberry at least until December 31, 2006 unless a problem arises with the program due to it no longer being upgraded.

If you are using a package other than Mulberry for your e-mail, you are welcome to continue to do so. However, Thunderbird will be the e-mail software that will come pre-installed on computers and which IT will offer the highest level of support.

If you have questions or need assistance transitioning to Thunderbird, please don't hesitate to contact the IT Help Desk at x 7225.
