Secret Garden
by Akiko Dogakinai

In my childhood, I always played in the yard behind my house. The size of the yard is not so big; it is a little larger than our classroom in Miller; however, it was big enough for me to play. It has many trees and flowers: pine, Japanese apricot, cherry, maple, locust, roses, tulips, begonias and sunflowers. Every season, I enjoy the changing color of nature in the yard. In Spring, the yard is bright green with a fresh breeze and happy songs of birds. Everything is shining under the gentle sun. I feel like taking a nap on the grass there. Then, in Summer, there appear vivid colors because of the variety of flowers: red, violet, yellow, pink and orange. It is like a palette. The sweet smells of the flowers fill the yard in summer. The fragrances cast a spell on me. Fall seems lonely, and bitter varied colors make me sensitive and emotional; but I like the colors of fall. Trees turn red or yellow; especially maple trees turn wine red. The scenery is fantastic. The lonely but chic colors make me sensitive and emotional. In winter, the yard is covered with snow and everything becomes silver white. The glittering snow makes the whole world bright. It is like watching as an artist adds a variety of colors to his painting. Every day, every minute, new colors appear. Very often, our neighbor's cats and dogs or foxes bring enjoyable color. They come to my yard as if the yard were theirs. They take a nap and play with their partners.

There is a sculpture, Guardian Deity of Children, in the middle of the yard. He is carved from gray rock. He seems cold because of his hard and dark color, but he is standing in peaceful prayer and his gentle face makes me calm. He always watches me with tender eyes, like a mother keeps her eyes on her baby. I can do everything in front of him. Actually, I am shy and I never sing in front of people, but I can before him because he does not laugh at my singing. I even tell my secrets to him because he has kept our promise and has never told my secrets to anyone. He is my very best friend.

My yard is surrounded by big trees; therefore, nobody can see inside and it is as private as an uninhabited island. I think this is one of the reasons I feel special about my yard. Nature in the yard and the Guardian sculpture are like another mother for me. It really is my secret garden.
