Misun Choi: An Introduction

Let me introduce myself. My name is Misun Choi from Seoul Korea. I have been in Portland since last summer. My parents live here and other family members also live in the United States. My parents came here five years ago; therefore, my parents and I lived separately for four years. While I lived alone in Korea, I worked at a hotel because I studied tourism at a junior college in Korea. I had wanted to work in any part of the hotel. I applied to a couple of hotels when I graduated college. As I worked for four years, I met many foreigners in the hotel. However, I didn't talk too much in English because I didn't have confidence to speak English and I was too shy to talk with the foreigners. In addition, I made an effort to study English before I came here, but I wasn't successful. Learning English is an interesting thing, but is not an easy thing because I have spoken Korean for twenty seven years. I missed my family and wanted to learn English; therefore, I decided to come over to the United States. I desire to speak English very well. After I speak English very well, I am going to study tourism in college in the U.S. While I study in college, I want to make a trip around the United States. I take great delight in travelling. As soon as possible, I want to travel many places, not only in the United States, but also around the world. I think that is the way to widen my knowledge and gain confidence in myself. Anyhow, I am glad to be together with my family and learn English now.

Misun Choi: The Writer

Writing is very hard work for me, both in Korean and in English. I always have a lot of ideas in my brain, but I cannot express them on the paper. In particular, to write in English is more difficult than in Korean. The reason is English is not my mother tongue. I don't have a large vocabulary and I read very slowly. When I write an essay, I am busy looking up words in the dictionary. Also, I worry about grammatical errors. I always take a long time to write the essay and cannot spend that much time. I think that my writing style is like "the ugly duckling." My writing skill is behind now. However I'll become a swan. I am the ugly duckling, but in the future, I will be very graceful and flow easily like a swan on a calm lake (It may be at the end of this semester!!!) I will get more writing practice in this class and reading practice during this semester. I think that my writing style has something to do with my personality. I didn't have confidence before, but I'm sure I can do well. At the end of this semester, I expect to improve my reading and writing skill. I will do my best. I am reading children's books now, but I will read Shakespeare in the future.
