ISALC, Lewis and Clark College

Mubarak Al-Khaili: An Introduction

My name is Mubarak. I'm 26 years old. I was born in the UAE. When I was 17 years old, I volunteered for the army during the Gulf War. I finished high school in 1991 and I joined UAE University the next year. I graduated in architecture in 1998. I worked for four months, and then I came to Portland in September 98. The purpose of my coming is to study English and prepare for my masters degree at PSU. I chose Lewis and Clark College because it has a very good program in teaching for international students. I want to learn English because it's the international language to communicate between people and it will help me in my work. After I finish my mastersdegree I plan to return home and continue my work. In my free time in winter, I like going hunting, especially with falcons. Also I like safaris and camping in the wild. However, in the summer, I like going fishing and traveling by car with my friends.

Mubarak Al-Khaili: The Writer

I don't know how I'm going to describe my writing because I didn't think about it before. In my writing, I try to choose simple words and clear examples. This is how I write in English because I'm always afraid of misspelling and grammar mistakes. However, I feel that I have the sense to organize the order of the ideas when I'm familiar with the subject that I'm going to write about. However, I get confused among the ideas when I find the subject is difficult, and I don't know a lot about it. If I'm going to compare my writing with an animal, I'm going to choose a camel. If you are familiar with camels, you know that you can control them and deal with them easily, even s five year old person can control them and take care of them. On the other hand, they are very confusing and very hard to deal with for the people who are not familiar with them and have little idea about them. That's what I think most people think about camels. I hope to improve my writing through this writing class. Also, I hope to a avoid misspellings and grammar problems. Another thing I hope to learn is how to deal with asubjects that I am not familiar with.
