ISALC, Lewis and Clark College

Anonymous: An Introduction

I am Sharon and even though my name sounds American, I am Italian. I'm 26 years old and I've just gotten married. It's weird how my life has changed in a few months; I used to live with my parents in the country where I was born, I used to read write and speak my native language, I used to eat different food, I used to work and now …….well, not anymore. Even my name here in the U.S. is pronounced differently!

It's a really huge change in my life in every sense. I had never thought it possible to go back to school again. I considered myself too old to attend class, do homework and receive grades. However, now I'm immersed in this new reality called Lewis & Clark. As far as I can see, being here for just a week, I must say that I am pretty excited even though it's hard to begin all this again at my age. I am really motivated to go on and learn as much as I can from this experience. Not everyone in Italy goes to an American college, so I feel lucky that, for many reasons, this is happening to me.

About my future I don't feel like saying anything because, less than a year ago, I never thought that it would have been possible to come to the U.S. and study. I was working and I thought about my future from that perspective. Therefore, I consider myself open to every change; I learned from my experience that I must be prepared for any possibility, trying to take the best out of it.

Anonymous: The Writer

If I have to compare myself to an animal, I'd love to do that with a cat ,which is my favorite and means a lot to me. But since I'm asked to compare my writing, things become a little different. So I will try to be as truthful as possible, comparing my writing to the nearest animal to a cat: the raccoon.

The raccoon is not a very well known animal in Italy; therefore, there is no prejudice or preconceived ideas about this unusual animal. I learned to know him here in the U.S. He is like a kind of fat cat, but he is still agile and fast. He keeps the feline attitude to be very careful and cautious, even if he seems to be friendly and reachable. And even if I know for sure that he is unfriendly and very wild, I can't feel anything else but sweetness and sympathy for him.

I think that my writing style can be compared to a raccoon because it is very rich and opulent, maybe because I'm always worried about not being understood, so I try to make myself as clear as I can, sometimes exaggerating with a lot of adjectives. I'm also very careful while writing, and usually I read again and again what I wrote, looking for grammar and spelling mistakes. However, I can consider my writing also agile and quick; I like to write and sometimes I keep going on writing forever, starting from a topic, passing to another and ending with another one.

Even if it sounds weird, I came to the conclusion that besides a little bit of grammar or spelling problems that can obviously slow down my English writing, there are not so many differences between my Italian and English styles. If I have something to write about, I follow my bent whatever different language I have to use, just like your thoughts will be the same in whatever language you have to express them.

I am really glad to have the possibility to understand the American way to write (that is different from the one I'm used to!). Therefore, I have two targets: the first one is to learn as much as possible in order not to get in trouble in college, the second one is, hopefully, to reach good results considering my commitment. No wonder, then, if I feel very proud of myself when, besides not making grammar or spelling mistakes anymore, I will be able to create a coherent and well developed essay.
