ISALC, Lewis and Clark College

Yu-Shan Liu: An Introduction

Yu-Shan Liu is a Chinese name, and I am from Taiwan. Although my mom is Japanese, I don't speak Japanese. I went to high school in Cincinnati, Ohio for two years. I like to travel between countries a lot because it helps me to make more friends internationally. I went to Europe this past summer with the choir that represented the state of Ohio. I had a great time there, not only those fantastic experiences of performing in Europe, but also spending time with my long-time German friends. I like to play piano as well. Playing piano makes me calm, and I think playing piano is one of the best ways that I can express myself totally.

There are two major reasons that I chose Lewis & Clark College. First of all, I am very interested in International Affairs and Lewis & Clark College has a very good program in this particular field. Secondly, the west coast is closer to my home, Taiwan, compared with Cincinnati, OH and Portland has a very good international airport. I came here for college visits twice last year; I felt not only the campus was very beautiful, but also the students and the faculty were very friendly. After the second college visit, I decided to come here, and I feel so happy and glad to become one of the members of the Lewis & Clark family. Hsiao-Ling Liu is also a student in Lewis & Clark, and she is my aunt. Both of us are every excited to be here.

Yu-Shan Liu: The Writer

About my writing style, I describe myself as a monkey when I write in Chinese. People consider monkeys as very clever and funny in my country. I am able to express my feeling very well without making any mistake in grammar or vocabulary. Even if I am using boring sentences to describe situations, I would rather use a happy tone to explain them, and I can do that in Chinese. However, my writing style in English is not as good as in Chinese, and I think it is neither fish nor fowl. As you can see, my writing is not that organized and that uniform, not only because of the grammar problem, but also because I have not gotten used to the structure of the English essay. Maybe it is because English is my second language, and I cannot use English as smoothly as Chinese yet. I have troubles expressing myself in English. I cannot write as much as in Chinese, and I cannot show my emotions that well. I really want to accomplish all these things above. However, I am still learning. I hope that one day I can use English as well as Chinese. I want to improve my organization and grammar by taking the writing class. Also, I want to learn how to write a perfect research paper from the seminar class because the research paper is one of my weaknesses. These are the main goals I have in my writing courses.
