Pine, one of the Email programs used at L.C., is used for electronic communication within the class, across campus, or around the world. Simple Pine instructions are in your notebook. Complete Pine instructions are also available on the WWW.
You will send Email to individual classmates. (To: <login name>) A list has been created for you, called "esl - 382", which includes all members of the class and your teacher. Sending Email (To: esl - 382) will send the message to all class members. You will also create "distribution lists" so you can easily send Email to a group of students in the class or to the ISALC teachers.
Here, you can find names and logins of your classmates, your ISALC teachers and any other person who has an Email account at L.C.
There are many things to learn about using Email. Use the Email checklist to see how much you know. You will learn most of these skills by completing the Email Assignments below. If you don't know how to do something on the checklist and it is not covered by an Email assignment, please ask your teacher.
Discussion Lists, are electronic mailing lists composed of people who share a common interest and want to communicate with one another via Email. People subscribe to discussion lists via Email. Some of your teachers are members of discussion lists such as TESL-L (for ESL teachers) or Neteach-L (teachers who use the Internet in their teaching). There is a discussion list for international students, (SL-Lists) and there are 10 topics available for discussion: (intro, chat (low level), discuss (high level) business, engl (learning English), event, movie, music, scitech, sport). There is information in your textbook on how to subscribe to the SL-Lists and there are complete details on the WWW at SL-Lists. If you are interested in joining SL-Lists, you can complete an extra credit assignment. (See below).
Extra Credit Problem Solving Assignments: (1 point added to final grade average for each problem correctly answered AND written in your *best* English)
Extra Credit SL-List Assignments: (up to 2 points added to final grade average-you must complete 1 and 2)
