ISALC: ESL 382: Computer Applications - Fall 1998
Hello, everyone. Today let me introduce my self.
My name is Emiko Imai. I'm from Japan. I was born and brought up in Tokyo. Before I came to the U.S., I had never lived in anywhere except in Tokyo. Therefore, when I came here at first, I was bewildered by the change in my life. Now, I'm entirely accustomed to living in the U.S. and eating American food because around 10 month have passed since I came here.
I came to the U.S. for the purpose of improving my English skills. After school is finished, I'm going to go back to Japan to take the national examination for interpretation guide. If I can pass the exam, it will be comparatively easy to get a good job, and It must become my lifework. I suppose people who have fruitful work are happy because they can boast of their work. Therefore, I want to acquire English for my bright future. Anyway, my life has quite changed since I came here. That's a great stimulus to me, so I feel really happy to be able to study in the U.S. I'm going to do my best to achieve my objective.
I'm going to talk about my family. I have parents and a younger sister. My father works for trade company. He has been living in Canada for half of the year, and he often visits Reykjavik in Iceland for his business. Therefore, he can speak English fluently. I want to be like my father sometime. My mother is really interested in traveling. She often travels to foreign countries. She went to Brazil and India during this year. My sister has learned architecture in agraduate school. After she graduated, she got a job with a construction company. They're still living in Tokyo.
I'm going to describe my personality. I'm optimistic about everything. I always try to look on the bright side of things. Next, I'm pretty good at striking up a conversation with strangers; also, I'm good at making people laugh. My friends sometimes say I'm cheerful. On the other hand, I'm careless and hasty. I know these are my weak points, and I sometimes remain obstinate in my opinion.
I like all kinds of sports. In particular, I'm interested in deep sea diving. I've been diving for six years, and I've been to several countries for diving. The red sea is the best I've ever seen. This ocean has a good degree of transparency because this area has had only a little rain. I've been afraid while diving when I've run into some sharks and they've come close to me. However, I have looked at life under the sea in admiration everywhere. I've seen many beautiful, funny and rare fish, and I've seen the grandeur of the natural topography. The greatest thing is to experience a feeling of swimming like a space walk.
Secondly, I'm also interested in skiing. We have many places for skiing in Japan. Skiing is popular among Japanese people. Accordingly, the express ways are jammed every weekend during winter because many people go to ski areas. It's hard to reach there in a short time. However, I've been there frequently to become skillful in skiing. Actually, as soon as I came here, I got a car to go skiing. If you want to learn skiing, let me know. I obtained a license for teaching skiing to beginner a couple of years ago.
I'm so glad to meet you and to be here with you. I look forward to taking the class with you during the fall semester. I guess we can share an enjoyable time wherever we are. I want to make a lot of good memories with you before I go back to Japan. Thank you.
