Transportation in Tokyo
Questions? Erina Otani
Have you ever been to Tokyo? Tokyo is the capital of Japan,
so many people live there. Therefore, there are some good mass transportation
systems including the subway, buses, and taxies. When you go there, you have
many options. I am going to tell you about those, so you can know about more
specific ways to get around Tokyo.
The subway
There are thirteen subway
(1) lines, and also, Monorail and railway lines. When you see the
subway map (2), you might be confused. The lines revolve around
Tokyo metropolitan area. Particularly, Yamonote line is used by many people.
During rush hour, about 5million people use the subway every day. The subway
comes every 3-5minutes. During the rush hour, people are jammed next to each
other because of the crowds. The cheapest subway cost 160yen(U.S $1.50) in the
metropolitan area. The cost depends on the distance you want to fraud. If you
are under 6years old, you dont have to pay or if you are 6-11years old,
you will pay half of the adult cost. In Japan, they have automatic
ticket gates (3), so you have to pass the gate when you enter and
exit. If you want to transit to an other line, you have to pick up your ticket
and keep it when you exit. The subway station is very complicated and crowded,
but it is the most convenient system in Tokyo.
The buses
There are four different varieties of buses in Tokyo including
urban (4),
express (5), midnight express, and tour. However, people
usually ride the urban, so I am going to tell you just about it. The urban bus
cost 210yen; if you pay the cost, you can go everywhere you want to go. In Japan,
there are two patterns of payment. The first one is you have to pay the cost
when you start to ride; the second one is opposite, you pay when you get off.
When you ride the bus, you should take a bus ticket, which has written on it
the number of areas you can travel to. If you want to get off, you have to push
a button, which is located on the windows and the ceiling. When you ride the
bus, you should take a bus ticket for the appropriate number of areas. After
that, you put your money and ticket into a machine. Also, you can get a bus
card, which can be used instead of money. The bus card is inserted into the
machine and you have to pick it up. Dont forget!! Buses are a very good
system. However, if there is heavy traffic, you will have a problem, which is
to be late.
The taxies
Taxies (6)are
very convenient, but a little bit expensive. You can catch them anywhere. Also,
there is a big taxi stop (7)
in the station, airport, and so on, so you can catch them there. If you want
to get a taxi, you should raise your hand. After you catch one, the taxis
door opens automatically, so you dont have to open it yourself and, of
course, it closes too. When you are in your house, you have to call them and
say your name. Usually after 5-10 minutes, they will come your house. The basic
fare is 660 yen ($ 6) and you can go around 1.2 miles for the fare. However,
after the distance is exceeded, it goes up 80 yen each 288meters. Remember,
in Japan, you dont have to pay a tip. Usually, taxi drivers dont
speak English, so you should write your destination address and directions in
Japanese. Taxies are very comfortable because, they are like a car, so you can
sleep in the taxi if you want.
Conclusion
In Japan, there is a good mass transportation system. I think the subway is the most convenient system. Some people think taxies are the best. However, taxies are very expensive, so you might spend too much money, if you always take a taxi. Also, buses are very cheap and you might be able to go anywhere you need. I have told you many things, so you will be alright. Please enjoy your travels to Japan, especially Tokyo. I hope you can use these transportation systems. Good Luck!!

Transportation in Seoul
Questions? Andy Kwon

Seoul, the capital of South Korea, is famous for its heavy traffic,
so Seoul has developed good transportation systems. There are several choices
available for transportation in Seoul such as subways, buses, and taxies. These
transportation systems might help you to travel or go anywhere in Seoul. I am
going to introduce the major transportation systems in Seoul.
The subway
The subway (1),
which is eight lines (2)
and one national railway line, covers the entire area of Seoul and goes to rural
areas nearby Seoul. Especially, line 2 goes to most of the areas in Seoul. The
subway arrives about every five minutes; also, during rush hour time, which
is 7 am to 9am and 5 pm to 7pm, it arrives every two minutes. The cost is probably
cheaper than any other transportation. Zone 1 is 500 won (US $ .40). Zone 2
is 600 won (US $.50). You also can use a monthly pass that costs 10,000 won
(US $10). The subway is very clean and modern, so you can use it very comfortably.
The subway is the most popular transportation in Seoul. Sometimes, you may be
able to take the theme subway, on which is drawn some pictures and you can watch
movies in the subway, too! It will be interested if you take this subway the
first time.
The buses
There are four different kinds of buses: regular
(3), express (4),
village (5)
, and Seoul city tour (6).
The regular bus fare is 500 won for adults, 340 won for students and 200 won
for children. The express bus has more advantages than the regular bus. It means
that you usually have a seat is much faster and has fewer stops than the regular
bus, but the fare is US $1. These buses cover the entire area in Seoul according
to each bus number. The village bus has short lines and distance in the small
area in Seoul such as downtown or suburbs. The price is only half of the regular
bus price. The city tour bus is to travel in Seoul for tourists, especially,
foreigners. This bus doesnt go everywhere in Seoul, but it goes to all
the famous
places (7)in Seoul, and the main locations are downtown, Namdeamun,
which is the first national treasure in South Korea, Iteawon, where many foreigners
live in, and so on. It is helpful to people to save time and money. The fare
is US $5. To be honest with you, the regular bus is very crowded; however, because
of the lane for buses, the buses are much faster than you think.
The taxies
Taxies are available anywhere and are generally clean. There
are two kinds of taxies in Seoul. One is the regular
taxi (8). Usually, these taxies are white or silver and the top
has a taxi sign. The fare automatically starts at US $1.50 and goes
up after about 1.3 miles, then increases US $.15 every 0.3 miles. The other
is the deluxe taxi (9).
It is two times as expensive as the regular taxi. The car is very luxurious
and the driver, who is trained in English, might speak English to the passengers.
In addition, you dont have to give tip. Most Koreans dont give one,
so you dont need to spend the extra money, either. In general, the taxi
driver is very kind. If you dont know the road, he or she teaches it kindly,
especially to foreigners.
Conclusion
Seoul might be much more crowded than the capital of your country, but the transportation is very convenient and not expensive. You would be able to go anywhere in Seoul with these kinds of transportation systems. Even if you dont have a car, you can go everywhere in Seoul quickly and conveniently. Also, you can save a lot of money and find your way by using these systems, so you don't have to rent a car. See in all, Seoul's transportation system is great.

Japan and Korea are related countries in Asia, so both countries
are similar in culture and lifestyles. This means that we have lived almost
the same way in our life. As time goes by, our economies have developed better
and better, so we expect more comfortable lives. In developing, people have
to work hard and are very busy. We think that this is related to transportation
system. Japan and Korea, especially Tokyo, which is the capital of Japan, and
Seoul, which is the capital of Korea, are two of the worst traffic cities in
the world. However, this has forced us to some of the best transportations system
in the world. As part of this project, we are going to introduce the transportation
system of two capitals of these two countries by comparing and contrast. Actually,
we have the same transportation systems such as subway, bus, and taxi, but the
fares, and some details of the systems are different.
The subways in these two cities are the most popular methods of transportation.
During the rush hour time, the subways in both cities arrive more frequently
than arrives normal time. However, the fare is different. The subway of Tokyo
is more expensive. Also, Tokyo has more subway lines. It might be become Tokyo
got the subway system easier than Seoul.
The buses in these two cities are the oldest transportation system. There are
four kinds of buses. Tokyo and Seoul have regular, express, and tour bus, but
Tokyo has a bus for midnight instead of the village bus that Seoul has. Both
cities have a lane for buses during rush hour time, so we dont need to
worry about traffic jam during rush hour time. When we take the bus, we can
go to famous places in these two cities by taking tour buses. Like with subways,
fare bus of Tokyo is more expensive than Seoul.
The taxi system of Tokyo and Seoul has many similarities. The taxies are the
most expensive transportation in both of cities. However, it might be the fastest
transportation, depending on where you are going; you are able to go anywhere
in a taxi. Unlike other American countries or Europe countries, you dont
have to pay a tip in either of our two cities. Taxi driver in Tokyo cant
speak very well, but the drivers in Seoul who are trained can speak English.
Japan and Korea, have similar cultures and lifestyles. In Asia are almost all-same
life and many people in there. Tokyo and Seoul are the capital of these countries;
so we have very heavy traffic, with similar problems in both countries. Nevertheless,
we have some of the beat mass transportation systems in the world. Subway, buses
and taxies are very convenient and comfortable for us. Therefore, when you go
these cities, you can use these transportation systems. It might be very hard
work for you, but I have told you about these, so you can use them!
