Hyundai Company¹ is the largest company in the Republic of Korea. The Hyundai Company is managing about 45 industry sectors. Hyundai began to manage structural engineering first in 1950. After the Korean War, Korea did not have any industry and infrastructure. But, Chung Ju-Yung², who established Hyundai structural engineering, tried to build new buildings and many structures. Although the Korean economy in 1950 was very weak, Chung managed the company strongly and had the trust of the Korean people. Since 1960, after President Park proposed a project called, "Developing the Korean Economy - 5 Years Plan," Hyundai Company has led the development of the Korean economy. Particularly, Hyundai succeeded in building structures and highways in south Asia, so its size was increasing.

Finally, Chung decided to establish Hyundai Motors and In-Chon Iron Manufacturing Company. Most people thought that it would be impossible but Chung established Hyundai Motors and made the first original Korean car, 'Pony'³. Then Hyundai succeeded in making the first export to Canada. Now, Hyundai Motors is the main subsidiary with heavy industry and structural engineering in Hyundai Company. Hyundai Motors' sales were about 11 billion dollars in 1997. Their automobiles are selling in the U.S and many other countries.

In 1970, Chairman Chung had confidence in the auto business, so he decided to accept the challenge of shipbuilding. People said that he was crazy, but he succeeded to contract to build two oil tankers from Greece before he established a factory. After factories were established in the Ulsan, Hyundai manufactured two oil tankers immediately. The name was changed from Hyundai Heavy Industry Company in 1970 and now they are manufacturing many kinds of ships, plants, engines and heavy equipment. Hyundai Heavy Industry Company is among the ten best heavy industrial companies in the world. Especially, the shipbuilding part's⁴ size is the largest in the world. Their sales are about 6.1 billion dollars each year.

In 1980, The Hyundai Company began to broaden their business area fast and they were the main support company for the Olympic Games in Seoul, 1988. They established Hyundai Electronics and they challenged Samsung Electronics.

However, in 1997, The Korean economy required help from the IMF fund. So, many kinds of companies were destroyed and their size was decreasing. Of course, Hyundai Company had to change its structure and reduce its scale. So many staff were fired and many kinds of industries were sold by other countries' companies.

In 1998, although Chairman Chung was very old (83), he went to North Korea and he donated over 1000 cattle to improve relations. Because he came from North Korea, and he knew so many people who come from North Korea can't go to their home town, he succeeded to contract a tourist area at Mt. Gum-Gang⁵ (the most beautiful mountain in North Korea). And he contracted for many other development industries in North Korea. Now, Mt. Gum-Gang is the only place that South Koreans can go in North Korea. Many South Korean people are touring Mt. Gum-Gang North Korea because of Hyundai.

Hyundai is again the best company in the Koran economy. Their main industries are automobiles, shipbuilding, heavy industry, oil, and electronics. They are again leading the Korean economy, along with Samsung Company and LG Company.

ADNOC COMPANY

Over the recent years, UAE has become highly dependent upon petroleum products. It started in October 1973, when Sheikh Zayed¹ bin Sultan Al_Nahyan incorporated Abu-Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). This was aimed towards specializing in the marketing and distribution of petroleum products.

One of the most profitable distributors is ADNOC². It has become one of the largest petroleum companies in the gulf. The ADNOC group³ of companies has many branches that bring together the success of the company . These consists of three oil and gas operating companies, five support companies, three joint ventures, and two maritime transport companies. All of these subsidiaries must protect health, safety, and environment (HSE) to keep their companies successful.

There are many ways in which ADNOC keeps the environment clean. Some of them are: commit to meet defined, measurable HSE target⁴, develop maintain HSE emergency and procedures, openly report HSE performance and provide HSE training to employee and contractors. These are all part of the health, safety and environment (HSE) policy. However, in focusing on environmental issues, ADNOC has four rules they go by, improving their use of natural resources and energy, providing products and services that will not cause harmful effects on the environment, protecting historical areas, and keeping the impact of ADNOC group activities within the environment law. These policies have helped keep ADNOC as one of the cleanest⁵ and safest companies in the gulf region.

There have been many projects that have contributed to the awards won by the ADNOC group⁷ such as, Mass Reduction Of Injection Water Dumped to the Desert. This is known as the ADNOC HSE award. In the past, when they produced water for the water supply it didn't meet quality guidelines for injection and they were diverted and discharged directly to the desert. The supreme winner was (ADNOC) HSE Abu-Dhabi company for on shore oil . They won this award for reducing the amount of oil dumped in the ocean. Second place winner was (GASCO) Abu-Dhabi Gas Industries Limited. They won this award for amount of gas pollution that goes with air. Because the gas is a potentially valuable fuel, but when let to the atmosphere it become a wasted resource and pollutant. Third place winner was (ADMA-OPCO) Abu-Dhabi Marine Operation Company for getting more people involved in the HSE issues.

In conclusion, ADNOC is and will continue to be one of the most successful petroleum distributors in terms of cleanliness and safety of it is environment ⁷ throughout its companies. The main goal is to uphold their status and keep improving in all areas of the HSE.
