Course Description:
This course is designed to provide pre-service and
in-service teachers with the pedagogical principles and hands-on
skills needed to incorporate technology into the second/foreign
language classroom. Participants will examine literature and
evaluate research on CALL, applying this knowledge to the hands-on
exploration and creation of computer-based materials and lessons.
Topics to be covered include selecting, using and evaluating
software and Web sites, integrating computer-based resources into
curricula, improving Internet search skills, creating Web pages
and online lessons, developing technology-based projects, and
utilizing Web-based collaborative tools. Participants will extend
their learning beyond the classroom via an Email list and
Web-based discussion board.
Instructor:
Class Hours/Location:
- The class will meet on four consecutive Fridays (6/29, 7/6,
7/13, 7/20) from 8-5 in Neuberger Hall Computer Lab, Room 437
- East Hall 109 from 10-12 and 3-5 will also be available for
off-computer discussion
- The instructor will be available for individual help/questions
in the classroom, both before and after the official class
hours.
Required Text and Materials:
- All of the materials are available online at http://www.lclark.edu/~krauss/ling410sum2001/callsyllabus.html
The Syllabus and basic course materials are available in hard copy
from Clean Copy on Broadway.
- Spiral Notebook (50 pages should be sufficient)
- Zip disk formatted for PC
- Standard 1/2 inch 3-ring binder with dividers (optional)
Class Communications:
Computer Hardware/Software Requirements:
- All students must have a working email account, which is
checked daily during the course.
- In addition to working in class on Fridays, students will
complete assignments outside of class.
- Computers are available in the Neuberger Hall Labs (check
hours) and in the Library (24 hours, 7 days/wk)
- Students may also work at home or on any Internet-connected
computer. The minimum requirements are
- a reliable connection to the Internet
- a reliable e-mail account, accessible daily
- a Web browser - Netscape 3.x or higher or Internet
Explorer 3.x or higher
- Note: You will not be able to access the
Discussion Page if you use an AOL browser.
Grading:
- 80% of the grade will be based on completion and quality of
class assignments (a more detailed description will be provided in
a separate Email you will receive before the class begins).
- 20% of the grade will be based on in-class participation
(contribution to discussions, relevancy of questions posed,
ability to work in groups).
- Because this class meets only four times, any student who
misses more than one class session will not receive a passing
grade.
Instructor's Note:
- You will be sharing a set of online materials with students
who are not in this course. In those materials, any special
instructions or links for this class will be noted
by purple text and/or this purple
