B. ESL
Independent Study Lab: (15
minutes)

Works like a language lab only better! Available to anyone with
Internet access, anywhere, any time. Can be used in a computer lab as
a whole-class activity or used independently on campus or at home.
Teachers can assign sites to be studied based on student need or
leave the choice up to the student. Many of the sites include
follow-up writing activities which result in students' writing being
published on the Web at the ESL Independent Study Lab.
- 100 + high quality sites: categorized by skill, graded for
difficulty, clearly annotated
- 1st and/or last site in each category links to many
additional resources.
- Many sites need no special plugins. Links to RealAudio and
Shockwave provided if needed.
- Students encouraged to submit "Reviews" of Lab sites.
Reviews are posted to the Lab.
- Students encouraged to complete "Interact" activities.
Writing is posted to the Lab.
- Checklist of all Lab sites can be printed so teachers and
students can keep track of sites studied.
C. Integrating
the Internet into the Classroom: An Online
Course (15 minutes)

bulletin board, created for USIA
(United States Information Agency), contains materials for 4-week,
intensive, hands -on course.
- Course taken by over 100 European EFL teachers/trainers +
Oregon content and ESL teachers
- Week
1 - Introduction to content-rich websites; pedagogy of
teaching with online materials
- Week
2 - Web page creation, Web searching and Website
evaluation
- Week
3 - Looking at sample activities, courses and
telecommunications projects
- Week 4 - Wrap-up, evaluation, plans for integration into
classroom teaching
- All course assignments accessible. Many are appropriate for
student use.
- Activities can be downloaded and modified if appropriate
credit is given.
- Scrapbook
with photos and bio-data of some teachers/trainers who have
completed the course
- Bulletin
Board discussion from most recent class is accessible
(login = guest; password = guest)
- Course will be taught online again in Summer, 2000. Two
hours graduate credit.
