Word Processing Instruction

Students at Lewis & Clark College receive basic keyboarding, Email and word processing instruction regardless of their entry level into the program. Students word process their compositions, but do not know how to exploit many of the more advanced features of the word processing software. At the intermediate level of the program, students may take a Computer Applications course and have the opportunity for more hands on exercisesto improve their word processing skills.

Assignment 1: Flier - Students are given a one page flier consisting of unformatted text with a graphic. By following detailed instructions in their class handouts, they can correct spelling and reproduce exactly the two page formatted flier.

Assignment 2: Candy Sale Flier - Again, students are given a one page flier, this time consisting of unformatted text with three graphics. However, in this assignment, the paragraphs and graphics are out of contextual order. Students must correct spelling, rearrange the paragraphs by cutting and pasting, place the graphics where they logically fit, and then complete the flier by adding any appropriate formatting.

Notice To All Students

Some of us want to start a social club for the foreign students at the LI. We think it would be fun and interesting to get togeher from time to tme as friends outside of class. We have thought of many kinds of activities that we might do, educational or fun:

Field Trips: We could plan trips to different crazy places in Portland. The LI and the ISLC have field trips to the beach and places outside of Portland, but we could go to places inside Portland. This wold be especialy valuable for students who don't have cars and usually stay on campus.

Parties: We could have parties in the afternoons after classes are out. Some people have suggested that we have informa parties each week.

Games: We could organize afternoons or evenings of games--teach us your country's cames or learn American games. Poker anyone?

Other ideas? The members of the club can decide what the focus of the club will be--serious or fun.

If you are interested in being a member of this club, please fill out the form on the next page. We will have our first meeting next Thursday at 4:30 in the Reading Lab of the LI.

Assignment 2: Candy Sale Flier without formatting and out of sequence.

One way to make money would be to have a candy sale. We can buy boxes of good quality chocolates from a national company. We can sell each box of candy for $2.00, and our club can keep $.75 for each box that we sell. We have 22 people in our claub--if we each sell 20 boxes, we can get a few hundred dollars for our treasury. Do you think you can sell 20 boxes of chocolates?

Of course you can. Think of how many friends love chocolate!! Everybodies loves chocolate. You can sell several to each freind. How many can you sell? Take a lot so we can make a lot of money ! If you can't sell all of them, you can return your extra boxes --you don't have to buy them yourself.

However, we need money to rent a van and we have no money in our treasury. If we want to take these trips, we will have to figure out a way to make money.
