ACTIVITY TITLE: RESCUE AT SEA

SUBJECT AREAS: Geography, Meteorology, Astronomy, Mathematics

YOUR INVESTIGATION:

It is the early morning hours of April 17, 1997. The sun has not yet risen. You are a member of the U.S.Coast Guard Search and Rescue Team. A frantic "May Day" message has just come in on the short wave radio from a small pleasure boat cruising the waters off the Long Island coastline. The S.O.S. is desperate, as they are unable to give you their exact coordinates. You need to mount a search and rescue team immediately.

Make a chart of the data you will need to aid in the rescue.

QUESTIONS TO GUIDE YOU:

  1. Will there be a full moon to aid you in your efforts? What percent of moonlight will you have?
  2. How many daylight hours will be available to you?
  3. How long will twilight last?
  4. What types of weather conditions will you need to know about?
