ACTIVITY TITLE:
RESCUE AT SEA
SUBJECT AREAS:
Geography, Meteorology, Astronomy, Mathematics
YOUR INVESTIGATION:
It is the early morning hours of April 17, 1997. The sun has not yet
risen. You are a member of the U.S.Coast Guard Search and Rescue Team.
A frantic "May Day" message has just come in on the short wave radio
from a small pleasure boat cruising the waters off the Long Island
coastline. The S.O.S. is desperate, as they are unable to give you
their exact coordinates. You need to mount a search and rescue team
immediately.
Make a chart of the data you will need to aid in the rescue.
QUESTIONS TO GUIDE YOU:
- Will there be a full moon to aid you in your efforts? What percent of moonlight will you have?
- How many daylight hours will be available to you?
- How long will twilight last?
- What types of weather conditions will you need to know about?
