MichaelDK joined the room.

MichaelDK: Hello, I'm here. Be right back.

IrinaGst1 joined the room.

MichaelDK: Good morning Irina

HarrietG joined the room.

IrinaGst1: Hello! :) I guess I am the first? It's 8 p.m. here. Susi can't join us today and she is sorry. :(

IrinaGst1: Hi Harriet! Good morning!

MichaelDK: Good morning Harriet.

IrinaGst1: What's the weather like?

HarrietG: Good morning to all. I feel the frustration of those who have not been able to make the real time chats. Could we maybe do another one at a different time?

IrinaGst1: What do you think, Michael?

HarrietG: The weather here in Milwaukie (just south of Portland, Oregon) is clear.

MichaelDK: Yes, the forecasters keep predicting rain, but the sun is winning out!

IrinaGst1: And we have heavy rain in Tambov now! :(

MichaelDK: Well, at least we have shelter to be inside

IrinaGst1: Yes :)

MichaelDK: I have asked others to suggest times for chats, but have not had a response.

MichaelDK: Since you both are returning chatters, I'd really encourage you to become members of Tapped In.

HarrietG: Is it ever going to be possible to get a time with Indonesia?

MichaelDK: You can then host chats any time you like!

MichaelDK: Actually, Indonesia, I believe is about the same time difference as Moscow.

IrinaGst1: Well, we will!

HarrietG: I joined Tapped In the other day and set up my own office, plus "favorite" pathways to my office and to Michael's office.

MichaelDK: Several of the Indonesians mentoned this as a good time.

MichaelDK: Harriet, that's great.

IrinaGst1: I think they have a morning of the next day, don't they?

HarrietG: I think so too.

MichaelDK: Just a second and I'll check on time.

IrinaGst1: Harriet, how do you manage to get through the tasks?

LyalyaGst3 joined the room.

MichaelDK: They are GMT +7

IrinaGst1: Hi Lyalya!

IrinaGst1: So they have a night then!

MichaelDK: So, in Indonesia now, it's midnight.

LyalyaGst3: Hello, everybody! It was a problem again to come to tghis chat

MichaelDK: Hi Lyalaya

IrinaGst1: What problem?

LyalyaGst3: Technical, connected with compiter !

IrinaGst1: I C

HarrietG: Right now, I just have one other class. My work is selling books online, and we haven't had many orders lately. Then I have several tutoring responsibilities. Nevertheless, I have been *busy* with this class.

MichaelDK: Well, glad you overcame it!

LyalyaGst3: I am gald to hear you !

MichaelDK: I guess I have a reputation for making teachers' lives busier for three weeks!

MichaelDK blushes

HarrietG: So it's midnight for Indonesia right now.

IrinaGst1: Yes? you have! :)

MichaelDK: Too bad I couldn't give the Indo's a call and get them with us!

LyalyaGst3: Michaell, I wrote to Elena from ELO about our desire to meet U in Moscow. Let's hope she will suoort us.

MichaelDK: By the way, speaking of calling. . .

IrinaGst1: But it's fun - to learn and to try new things

MichaelDK: THanks Lyalya, I'll write her as soon as we are done too

MichaelDK: Looks like me wife might come with me so it would be great for everyone to meet in Moscow.

LyalyaGst3: I will write her again. :)

IrinaGst1: Let me know if you want to meet in Moscow or somewgere in Ru

HarrietG: Did you see the email that their earthquake was a 7.2 off the west coast of Indonesia? I hope everyone is OK.

IrinaGst1: I hope so too

MichaelDK: Yes, so do I. Idwan wrote me "while" it was actually going on.

MichaelDK: He chuckled and said he finished his Hotlist just as the temblor arrived!

HarrietG: I guess it was an earth shaking Hotlist!

IrinaGst1: I hoped Maxim will join us. The fact is that my son is at school he teach but nobody know Max! He told he teach 10th grade - my son's...

MichaelDK chuckles at that one.

LyalyaGst3: Mishael, and it seems to me, we also make your life busier for three weeks ! Your poor family ! :)

MichaelDK: So Maxim teaches your son Irina?

IrinaGst1: And what about ours?!

MichaelDK: Actually, my wife helped me last night to update the Grading Grid.

IrinaGst1: I have read it. But NOBODY at school know even the name. I don't know what to think...

LyalyaGst3: Tell her hello ! And that we are eager to meet with her as well !

IrinaGst1: About Max Evstigneev. I have asked the headteacher...

MichaelDK: By the way, do any of you know what Skype is?

IrinaGst1: Only have listen about it

HarrietG: Earthquakes are scary. The first "big" one I was in was when I lived in southern California. It was 4.7 and just 10 miles away. I was so scared I ran out of the building. And then I thought, "Oh no, I'm responsible for all those children inside!" So I went back in. But 4.7 is not really that bad. Just scary.

MichaelDK: Yes, very scary.

LyalyaGst3: Harriet, where did U live in CA ?

IrinaGst1: Lyalya, have u been to CA?

LyalyaGst3: I understand nothing about Max Evstigneev ! CAn U explain me anything ?

HarrietG: I lived between Calabasas (which is just off Highway 101) and Malibu ( which is on the coast). They are both just north of Los Angeles.

LyalyaGst3: Yes, I was in CA, in southern CA.

IrinaGst1: I really can't/ We live in one city/ He said he worked at school my son is in/ But I can't reach him!! Nobody can help. He didn't answer too

IrinaGst1: Lyalya - was it an exchange program?

LyalyaGst3: Yes, I know that place, and I love L-A !!!! Especially sunny beaches ! I

HarrietG: So, Lyalya, did you find out any info about me on Google?

MichaelDK: I just know that Maxim teaches in Tambov at Gymnasia 12.

IrinaGst1: Yes, 10th grades/ My son's grade. :( but ...

LyalyaGst3: Harriet, I wil do it later , OK ? Just busy now with different tasks.

HarrietG: And the ocean water is warm enough to swim in. But it still feels kind of cold at first--you have to get your body used to it.

IrinaGst1: A mistery I have to solve

HarrietG: I'm just kidding. I was just curious.

MichaelDK raises his hand

IrinaGst1: Oh gosh --- you are lucky - to swim in the ocean in February

MichaelDK: Can I have a moment to tell you about Skype

MichaelDK: It's not really geeky, just a wonderful free way to talk long distance.

HarrietG: In Oregon, the ocean is freezing cold *any* time of year. The surfers wear wetsuits.

LyalyaGst3: No, it wasns't an exchange programme. The quetion is that I live in Moscow now, and different kind of echange programmes prefer to take teachers from regions but not from Moscow

IrinaGst1: I C

IrinaGst1: So what about Skype

HarrietG: So, what is Skype?

MichaelDK: THanks guys

MichaelDK smiles

MichaelDK: If you download Skype from http://www.skype.com

MichaelDK: And let's say your friend on the other side of the world does the same.

MichaelDK: You then simply click a link on your computer and his computer "rings"

MichaelDK: You can then talk for free for as long as you want.

IrinaGst1: What is the difference with ICQ?

HarrietG: Is it audio?

MichaelDK: You are actually taking!

MichaelDK: It's Internet telephony.

MichaelDK: ooops talking not taking

IrinaGst1: What about connection requiments

MichaelDK: It helps if you buy an inexpensive headset so the sound is more clear.

MichaelDK: If you have a decent internet connection, that's all you need.

MichaelDK: We talk with our grandkids in Hungary several times a week.

IrinaGst1: Dial connection as well?

MichaelDK: Dial connection would be iffy.

IrinaGst1: At home my comp is veery slow

MichaelDK: How about work? You could sneak a few minutes?

MichaelDK smiles

IrinaGst1: What about classroom use of it?

IrinaGst1: I do it :))))

MichaelDK: Actually, we also bought a $40 Web cam that sits on our computer.

IrinaGst1: Great

MichaelDK: Now we actually see our grandkids while we are talking with them and they see us!

IrinaGst1: Yes, it's much better

MichaelDK: Classroom use--yes, classes are beginning to Skype one another.

MichaelDK: Just thought I'd let you know as you'll be hearing much more about it as time goes on.

IrinaGst1: Sure

MichaelDK: Sorry to be "teacher" - now you can go back to chatting about your heart's desire. :-)

IrinaGst1 smiles

HarrietG: That has great possibilities for my friends and family also.

MichaelDK smiles back

IrinaGst1: Lyalya - how long have you been in CA?

MichaelDK: Yes, Skype saves us a lot of money.

LyalyaGst3: Harriet, if it is not too personal question - why did U move to OR ?

LyalyaGst3: more than 1 months

IrinaGst1: What did you like most there?

MichaelDK: Lyalya, did you paint the pictures in the booth you are standing next to in the photo you sent in?

IrinaGst1: Our friens live in Chico

MichaelDK: It's very nice that I have photos of all of you--I can picture you all while we are chatting together.

IrinaGst1: Yes, Lyalya wher was the picture taken?

LyalyaGst3: NO !!! The picture was taken in Paris, where artists sell their pictures, wondersul , nice place !

IrinaGst1 smiles

IrinaGst1: Are U going there in summer this year?

LyalyaGst3: I think no...

HarrietG: Actually, I was born in Oregon, in north eastern OR in the Blue Mountains of La Grande. Then my family moved to Albany, OR. My mother and I lived near her family in Indiana after their divorce. Then I had to move back to Tillamook, OR to live with my dad after my mother was killed in a car accident :-( Sorry, that's probably far more than you wanted to know. But I went to college in Eugene, OR and Portland, OR. I just moved to California on a kind of "adventure". But Oregon has mostly been "home". I have other family and friends here.

IrinaGst1: Actually I am going to stay in Italy but I'd love to have a trip to Paris for a couple of days

MichaelDK: This summer we are going to Oxford to celebrate our oldest son's receiving his PhD. We were thinking we might go over to Paris. . .

IrinaGst1: Well - a new idea wheer to meet :

IrinaGst1: Kidding

LyalyaGst3: IBe ready not to meet only tourists in Paris in summer !!!

MichaelDK: Harriet, that must have been so traumatic to lose your Mom that way--so sorry.

LyalyaGst3: Sorry - to meeet only tourists !!!

IrinaGst1: It is not that easy to arrange but the older I am getting - the smaller the world seems :(

IrinaGst1: Sorry Harriet

MichaelDK: BTW, I lived in Ontario Oregon for 3 years and spent a lot of time backpacking in the Eagle Cap. Still my favorite place in Oregon.

HarrietG: It took me about 30 years to really deal with it. Now I can talk about it. They didn't have counselling for children (I was 13) in those days.

IrinaGst1: Do U think it is easier for kids nowadays to overcome it?

HarrietG: I love the topography around La Grande. It's dry and mountainous and beautiful. Maria Montessori (famous child educator and author--you may already be quite familiar with her) said that no place feels quite as good to you as your birthplace.

IrinaGst1: I agree

MichaelDK: I'll get a photo of the Eagle Cap for you guys. If you come to Oregon and like nature, that's the place to go! www.matterhornswissvillage.com/aneroidlake.jpg

MichaelDK: This isn't far from where Harriet grew up.

HarrietG: I think the sooner a person deals with any kind of grief or trauma, the better.

LyalyaGst3: Michael, while in the UK - be careful with parking in UK , U need to pay for parking even on Sunday, din't forget about it, it doesns'st depend where U leave your car !!!

MichaelDK: Thanks Lyalya!

HarrietG: Actually, I only lived in La Grande until I was 2+

MichaelDK: It's so expensive over there anyway. We don't need a ticket

HarrietG: But I have visited a number of times as an adult.

IrinaGst1: Are U going to use chat in teaching? I am a little bit// afraid - how to keep it// undercontrol

MichaelDK: Oops Harriet, I should have said where you were born.

MichaelDK: Good question Irina.

HarrietG: That's OK

MichaelDK: Some rules for turn taking and with a set topic can be established.

IrinaGst1: How many Ss to start the activity - just for me to start using it? :)

MichaelDK: A smaller number is much easier to handle.

MichaelDK: Perhaps just 3 students.

IrinaGst1: I guess it is!

IrinaGst1: I C

IrinaGst1: Lyalya what is your current class?

MikhailGst4 joined the room.

MichaelDK: I think I mentioned that I have used asynchronous (e.g. Nicenet like our WDP) more than synchronous (e.g. chat).

MichaelDK waves to Mikhaili

LyalyaGst3: Irina, what do your mean ?

IrinaGst1: Hi Mikhail!!! :)

MikhailGst4: hello Hi

MichaelDK: Glad my namesake is here.

MikhailGst4: So do I

HarrietG: When I taught 5th grade last year, after 15 years since I had been in a classroom setting with that age group, I was *really* surprised at how much some of the students and *some of their parents* seemed to resent my giving consequences for breaking the rules. And this was a private school too!

IrinaGst1: What do U teach Lyalya?

HarrietG: I would think it would not be that way in Russia.

IrinaGst1: Harriet - the same here!!

HarrietG: Welcome, Mikhail.

MikhailGst4: Thanks

LyalyaGst3: English language :) But sometimes I think that geography ... :)

MikhailGst4: So glad to be here with you

IrinaGst1: Mikhail, what time is it now at your place?

MichaelDK: What types of consequences did you give for misbehavior Harriet? What about in Russia with that age group of child --10-11 years old.

MikhailGst4: 20/45

LyalyaGst3: Michael, you teach geography as well ?

MikhailGst4: Yes

IrinaGst1: The same here - 20:48

MikhailGst4: 8-11grades

LyalyaGst3: Nice to hear it !

IrinaGst1: In English?

MikhailGst4: No in Russian

MikhailGst4: For 14 years

IrinaGst1: We have chemistry in English at our 9th grade at school...

MikhailGst4: So I am English and Geography teacher

MikhailGst4: in work at a secondary school

IrinaGst1: Interesting -it's more common Histiry and FL

HarrietG: Yes, the age group was 10-11. They missed 5 to 15 minutes of their recess time. Or sometimes if they were really mean to their classmates on the playground, they would have to write 200 times: "I will not insult my fellow classmates." I don't think that was too stringent. But, boy, some of their parents did.]

MikhailGst4: but Geogr and eng have much common too

IrinaGst1: A nice idea - to write promisses

IrinaGst1: Yes, sure Mikhail

MikhailGst4: English concentrate all subjects

MikhailGst4: Sorry I am bad typer

HarrietG: On the other hand, other parents wanted discipline.

LyalyaGst3: When U are in Moscow - come to our faculty ! I invite U !

MikhailGst4: thanks

IrinaGst1: Did U try "intersubject" stuff? To mix two things together? :)

MikhailGst4: not yet

MikhailGst4: but it is interesting

IrinaGst1: Yes, I'd like it as a student, sure

MichaelDK: Our curriculum is content-based. I always preferred it and so did the students.

MikhailGst4: but there are elements of it at the lessons

IrinaGst1: We have something like that - countrysstudy

MichaelDK: Tell us more about country study.

MikhailGst4: And we have countrystudy at the Collegetoo

IrinaGst1: It is a part of ESL - Geography of English speaking countries

IrinaGst1: As well as Literature

MikhailGst4: We study History, Geography and culture of an English-speaking country

IrinaGst1: Different classes, not optionl by the way :)

IrinaGst1: It is in the curriculum

MichaelDK: So one class for history, one for geo. one for culture, but they are examing the same country. is that right?

MichaelDK: And all in English?

MikhailGst4: the same with my students at the College

LyalyaGst3: But general geography , nothing specific , not like our students ( of faculty of geography) study ...

IrinaGst1: Yes

MikhailGst4: yes

IrinaGst1: UK US Canada Australia

MikhailGst4: Uk and USA

MichaelDK: And Lyalya, you have to be very knowledgeable in geo. as you are training future teachers of geo, is that correct?

HarrietG: Also South Africa.

HarrietG: And New Zealand.

IrinaGst1: We don't study South Africa, I don't know why

HarrietG: Maybe too political.

IrinaGst1: Neither New Zealand

MikhailGst4: No no No No politics

IrinaGst1: Why?

LyalyaGst3: mmm, I don't think so.. I didn't have any background in geography

IrinaGst1: What about freedom of speech? :)

HarrietG: New Zealand is where they filmed "Lord of the Rings". Very beautiful country. And they say it's more British than Great Britain. My husband lived there for about a year.

MikhailGst4: Politic does not play any role in studyiing

IrinaGst1: Interesting I can't agree

MikhailGst4: The topic of politic is good one

IrinaGst1: WHAT to teach - isn't it politic?

MichaelDK: Lyalya, I guess we ESL/EFL teachers do become a "jack of all trades" with enough knowledge to teach English in many content areas.

IrinaGst1: But -- OK OK I'll stpo :)

MikhailGst4: but we do not study South Africa on the politic case

IrinaGst1: U R right Michael

HarrietG: Yes, I agree with Irina. Politics undergirds everything we do in the public arena. We just don't think about it.

MikhailGst4: ok

MichaelDK: Speaking of politics. . .

IrinaGst1: Really, Mikhail?!

MichaelDK: Debate between Clinton and Obama last night dealt quite a bit with RUssia!

IrinaGst1: I haven't watch/read it yet :(

MikhailGst4: Yes they do not now the name of our candidate

MikhailGst4: know

HarrietG: Oops

MikhailGst4: in Russia I mean

IrinaGst1: But it's OK - they do know theirs :)

HarrietG: I hope so!

MikhailGst4: great

LyalyaGst3: Yes, Michael .

MikhailGst4: smile

IrinaGst1: Do U speak about hot issues in class?

MichaelDK: Clinton knew it was Medvedev, but had a hard time saying it (as would I).

MikhailGst4: ok

MichaelDK: But the question was whether he would have any power or if Putin would still be running the show.

MikhailGst4: i see

IrinaGst1: I do remember a US teacher trying to say KHRUSTCHEV :)

IrinaGst1: We need simpler names :)

MikhailGst4: why?

IrinaGst1: kidding

HarrietG: When I have taught in private schools, if the kids are old enough to understand, I talk about hot issues, because I want them to start to think. In public school here, you would be taking a risk to talk about some issues--unless you agree with the "politically correct" point of view.

MichaelDK: NY Times article came out the other day very critical of Putin's "heavy hand" in the election.

IrinaGst1: My African student says I am the only one to say his last name Kalikamutima the right way

MichaelDK: Was very interesting that they put up a translation of the article on the NY Times blog using LiveJournal.

MichaelDK: Many many Russians commented on the article and then their Russian comments were translated back into English.

IrinaGst1: Politically correct - some things R universal :(

MichaelDK: Thought it was a great use of technology

HarrietG: Sadly so.

YuanB joined the room.

IrinaGst1: Hello!!!

MikhailGst4: hi

HarrietG: Welcome, Yuan.

YuanB: hi

MikhailGst4: how are youYuan

IrinaGst1: What time is it at your place?

YuanB: its 10:10

HarrietG: am or pm?

YuanB: am

MichaelDK: Hey guys, I've got an appointment. You are welcome to stay as long as you like!

YuanB: in california

IrinaGst1: 10/10 pm here in Tambov, Russia!

YuanB: wow

MichaelDK waves goodbye

LyalyaGst3: Mmmm, we were talking today about CA earlier

IrinaGst1: See you Michael

MikhailGst4: bye

YuanB: bye

HarrietG: Bye to Michael.

MichaelDK left the room (signed off).
