By Lynn Williams The purpose of this article is to communicate news about the library and policies that people may not be aware of. Hopefully, Library News will be a permanent part of Letter of the Law. The new copiers in the library have caused some frustration due to malfunctions. I think that almost everything is cleared up. One of the reasons that we selected these machines is their ability to use recycled paper and the fact that you can get two pages of a book onto one piece of paper. Double-sided copying and easy reduction was a requirement for us in selecting copiers. If you need assistance using any of the features of these copiers, please ask at the circulation desk and we will be more than happy to show you the intricacies of copying. The copier in the back of the library is a basic book copier and does reduction. The copy cards allow us to still charge $.05 per image to students. Since most of the general public and attorneys wont want to buy a copy card, the charge of $.10 per image will mostly be incurred by non-students. In an effort to economize paper use, word processing printing from the labs (or Network Access Seating in the reading room) can also be duplexed (double-sided). There are instructions in the lab about how to do duplex printing. In an effort to make everyones time in the library a positive experience, there are a few basic rules that we sometimes forget during the pressures of law school. Most students spend a significant amount of time in the law library and observance of these basic rules will ensure that your law school experience will be less painful for all of us.
Basic Rules of Courtesy in the Library: 1. Do not leave your materials in the carrels or on tables if you are going to be away for more than 15 minutes. Seating is tight and it isnt fair to your fellow students to keep a space in the library while you are in class for two hours. 2. Do not eat in the library. You may be loving those chips or that crisp apple, but the people around you get really uptight having to listen to and smell your food. Take a brief break and eat elsewhere. 3. Reshelve your materials in the correct place. There have been a high number of books left randomly on shelves. Please put books back where they belong so that everyone has a chance to use the material. 4. Being quiet in the library is a basic courtesy that most people observe. However, please remember that when you congregate in the front of the library, you not only block access to the doors, your conversation is carried through to the front of the reading room.
