The day of Phi Delta Phi's fall golf tournament dawned overcast and damp, but the rains did not come and a good time was had by all. Traditionally organized by the Business Law Society, the annual tournament was presented this year by Phi Delta Phi, with contributions from Lexis-Nexis and the Business Law Society. It was held on Saturday, October 10 at Progress Downs in Beaverton. 23 golfers turned out to play, including law students, attorneys, and one professor, the esteemed Steve Johansen. The group enjoyed a lavish spread at the 19th hole and prizes were awarded for longest drive and closest-to-the-pin. The winning team was composed of attorney/NWSL '98 grad Brian Collins and current students Matthew Short, Geoff Strong, and Greg Ellis, each of whom received an exciting prize and firm handshake from helpful 2L Jon Bial. In other news, Phi Delta Phi members are generously sharing their time to strengthen the larger community, reading to at-risk kids in elementary schools with the Start Making A Reader Today (SMART) program, and helping build homes with Portland Habitat for Humanity. The next scheduled Habitat work day is November 14 and anyone is welcome to join in (contact ecdavis@). That beloved NWSL tradition, the Canned Immunity food drive, which allows you to trade canned food for asylum from those pesky professors, is coming up in November. The snazzy Phi Delta Phi bulletin board in the lounge, new this year, will have details. Other upcoming events brought to you by Phi Delta Phi include a turkey raffle (proceeds to benefit Portland's homeless population), a speaker on ethics in the legal profession, and the spring ethics CLE. Phi Delta Phi is a legal honor society. 1Ls can join by doing 10 hours of community service and 2Ls and 3Ls by invitation. If you would like to know more about Phi Delta Phi or how to join, contact ecdavis@ or attend a membership meeting.
Sporty duffers Cliff Weston (2L/last-minute entrant), Professor Steve Johansen, Phil Kline (1L), and Attorney Paul Dodds (winner of both closest-to-the-pin prizes) record their scores at the 5th hole.
