Public Interest Law Project-A Bridge to Equal Justice!

How can I contribute to something greater than myself, you ask?

It’s that time of the year again! Time to start thinking PUBLIC INTEREST!

For starters, the 2nd Annual Car Raffle tickets are on sale now! Car raffle tickets are $35, or three for $100. The forms are available outside the PILP office and on the PILP board until February 20, 1999 (the last day ticket purchases may be received). Please take a few extra and mail them to your friends and family!

Why should you buy a car raffle ticket, you ask?

(Aside from the obvious–winning a Brand New 1999 Honda Accord LX!)

The average law student loan debt incurred is about $60,000, and this amount rapidly expands with lengthy payment plans that begin upon graduation. Unfortunately, law school graduates who have passion and commitment for causes in public interest are often deterred from pursuing such a career due to these financial consequences.

The car raffle raises money for the newly established Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP). Dean James Huffman and Associate Dean Martha Spence are working with others to put together a plan as to how the school will distribute the funds, who is eligible, as well as plans on how to raise additional funds. Ideally, the long-term goal is that LRAP will be an endowment fund which could provide close to complete loan forgiveness for those who choose to work in the lower-paying positions in public interest law. Also, by the way, SBA has endorsed LRAP!

Here's a great example of “what comes around, goes around”: last year’s winner, Sandi Pellikaan, happens to be one of our alumni. She is an attorney practicing indigent criminal defense for Metropolitan Public Defenders. She was an active member in the Public Interest Law Project all three years she was at NWSL, and she was an auction coordinator for two.

PILP t-shirts are also available for $15 at all PILP events and by email. All proceeds go to LRAP.

It’s also time to start thinking about items, time, and services you’d like to contribute to the 9th Annual Public Interest Law Project (PILP) Auction! The drawing for the raffle will again be held at 8 p.m. at the auction on Friday, February 26, 1999.

Why should I help with the auction, you ask?

It’s the biggest bash of the year! And it’s even more fun when you are an integral part of it. Be creative! Do you know someone at Kodak, a manager at a hotel, a computer software designer, an artist? These are all potential donors to the PILP auction! What contacts, ideas, services, items do you have that might help raise money for the auction? Every little bit helps! Last year’s auction raised $35,000 and PILP was able to provide 17 stipends to students like you and your fellow classmates to work their dream jobs! Feel free to contact our Auction Coordinators if you would like them to send out a contact letter to “pitch” public interest and solicit donations.
