Phi Delta Phi to Sponsor April CLE

By Emily Davis

Continuing a year of community service activities, the NWSL chapter of Phi Delta Phi finished last semester by raising $170 for the Portland Rescue Mission. In the week before Thanksgiving, Phi Delta Phi members sold $1 raffle tickets to a very supportive law school community, and each ticket had a chance to win a $25 gift certificate at Safeway, Thriftway, or Nature's Fresh Northwest. Gift certificate winners were 1L Chris Schwindt, 2L Mariel Combs, and 2L Dean Gates. The biggest winner, however, was the Portland Rescue Mission, which was able to provide Thanksgiving dinners for 140 people with the money raised by Phi Delta Phi.

Phi Delta Phi members continue volunteer efforts in the larger community. Several members read to elementary school kids weekly through the Start Making A Reader Today (SMART) literacy program, and a group of four members spent Saturday, November 14, working for Portland Habitat for Humanity. Future Habitat workdays are planned for Saturday, February 13, and Saturday, March 13. Anyone in the law school community who would like to participate in an upcoming workday is welcome; please contact Emily at ecdavis@ for details.

Phi Delta Phi is an honor society dedicated to the promotion of professionalism and legal ethics, and the NWSL chapter has traditionally furthered that objective in part by hosting a yearly Continuing Legal Education seminar focused on legal ethics. This year's CLE is scheduled for Saturday, April 10, and is entitled: "Traps for Young Lawyers." Students are welcome to register and attend, and volunteers are needed for preparatory and day-of tasks. It will be a great learning experience and opportunity to network with Portland lawyers!

If you would like more information about Phi Delta Phi, its community service activities, or how to join, please contact Emily at ecdavis@ or visit our bulletin board in the student lounge.
