Schedule of Events

 

Program:  The second annual Pacific Coast Undergraduate Mathematics Conference will be held at Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA on Saturday, March 31st, 2007.
The following is a tentative schedule of the conference program.
 

8:30-9:00 – Registration and light continental breakfast. (Elkins Auditorium)

9:00-9:50 – Morning Address by Don Schmidt and Joshua Schpok, Dreamworks Animation (Elkins Auditorium)

10:00-11:20 – Student talks (Appleby Center)
Four 15-minute talks per session (with 5 minute breaks).  Concurrent sessions organized by topic if necessary.

11:30-12:15 – Concurrent panel discussions (Appleby Center)
One panel will address issues pertinent to freshmen and sophomore math students.  The topic for this panel will be summer and career opportunities for math students.  We will invite panelists to discuss summer programs, REU’s and career opportunities for math students (such as the NSA, actuarial jobs, etc.)
The second panel will discuss graduate school for junior and senior students.  Panelists will represent a variety of different programs:  Ph.D. programs in mathematics, M.S. programs in mathematics and/or statistics, M.A. programs in teaching mathematics, M.A. programs in math education, etc.  The panel will address the different requirements of each program, when students should apply, how to apply, when the GRE is offered and other relevant topics.

12:15-1:15 – Lunch (Art Museum Courtyard)

We will serve a catered lunch to all pre-registered participants. During lunch we will encourage students and faculty from different schools to interact with each other and with the invited panelists.

1:15-2:15 – Student talks (Appleby Center)
Three 15-minute talks per session (with 5 minute breaks).  Concurrent sessions organized by topic if necessary.

2:15-2:30 – Coffee & Cookie Break

2:30-3:30 – Keynote Address by Dylan Kohler, Electronic Arts (Elkins Auditorium)

3:30-4:00 – Prize session
This very popular session will return this year and again will feature the awarding of certificates to the student speakers, a raffle of prizes for students with each student in attendance winning something to take home, and other recognitions for conference participants.
