EAST AFRICA: KENYA/TANZANIA (Fall) - Prerequisite: None. Program: Study focuses on the history, natural history, ecology, culture, and socio-economic institutions of East Africa. The itinerary includes intensive Swahili language training, the study of contemporary issues in urban and coastal East Africa, and the study of human and animal ecology in the Serengeti ecosystem. Accommodations include home-stays, small hotels, tents, and Maasai bomas. Fulfills the category "A" natural sciences and the two-course international studies requirement.

GHANA: SUMMER - Prerequisite: None. Program: Program is designed by the Music Department and focuses on traditional and neo-traditional arts and expressive culture of Ghana, West Africa. Students will participate in daily drumming and dance classes taught by master teachers in Accra, and will travel to areas outside the capital to visit cultural and historical sites, meet local artists and craftspeople, and attend festivals. The program is open to any student, but those with well-defined interests and experience with one of the arts and who are interested in Sociology/Anthropology and International Studies will benefit most. Lecture and seminar sessions will look at the exploration of how history, politics, and contemporary globalization have influenced arts and culture.
Fulfills Creative Arts and the two-course International Studies requirement. Application deadline is February 8, 2008.
Ghana Summer Program Information Sheet 2009/2010
SENEGAL: DAKAR (Spring) - Prerequisite: Two years of college French for non-majors; three years of college French for majors. Grade point average of 3.0 in language. Program: Study focuses on the historical, cultural, and socioeconomic institutions of sub-Saharan Francophone Africa. Special attention is paid to post-colonial politics, contemporary Senegalese society, grassroots development, and environmental issues. Housing is with host families.
