Kathryn Downing '73, publisher, president and chief executive officer of the Los Angeles Times, will give the keynote address at the 1999 Alumni Honors banquet, Friday, Nov. 5, at the Embassy Suites in downtown Portland. Downing was named president and chief executive officer of the Los Angeles Times in March 1998 and publisher in June 1999. The Los Angeles Times is the second-largest metropolitan daily in the nation. In 1995, Downing joined Times Mirror, as president and chief executive officer of Matthew Bender, the company's legal publishing division. Two years later, she was appointed president and chief executive officer of the combined companies of Matthew Bender and Mosby-Year Book Inc. She was named Times Mirror vice president in 1996, senior vice president in 1997 and executive vice president in 1998. The College will honor James Hurd '70, chief executive officer and president of Planar Systems, Inc. as its 1999 Distinguished Alumnus. Paul Dalrymple '70, M.A.T. '72 and Penny Plenk Dalrymple '71 will receive the Donald G. Balmer Citation for outstanding volunteer service to the College. Carissa Goux '88 will receive the Outstanding Young Alumna Award. In addition, the College will salute alumni who have contributed more than 30 hours of service to the College during the year.
