This exam, taken on-line in the summer prior to your first semester, aids in determining your level of quantitative reasoning proficiency and is necessary unless exempted (see below) for all students registering for any classes with a prerequisite of Math 055 or equivalent (see College Catalog, Graduation Requirements). You will need the prerequisite for certain required general education courses.
You are EXEMPT from taking the exam and may register for any course with prerequisite Math 055 or equivalent if you meet this criteria: an SAT I Math score of 630 or higher or an ACT Math score of 30 or higher, provided the score has been recorded with the Lewis & Clark Registrar. Otherwise, please take the exam if you want to register this summer for a course with the 055 prerequisite.
However, additional exemption criteria will be recorded with the Registrar as it becomes available and will be applied to mid-summer and future registrations: an AP score of 4 or higher (in Calculus, Statistics or Computer Science), an IB score of 7 or a grade of B or higher in a high school calculus course taken senior year. If you took calculus as a high school junior, please ask the Registrar to get your high school transcript from Admissions to validate your exemption.
Note: You may check the Test Summary Section of Web Advisor on the Registrar's web page to see what scores are currently recorded.
If you are NOT EXEMPT from taking the exam, please read the following.
Accommodations: If you are a student with a disability who requires accommodations, please notify the Office of Student Support Services at access@lclark.edu, or call 503-768-7156.
Registration: If you plan to register for a course that has a Math 055 prerequisite during summer registration, you must complete the exam at least 48 hours prior to registration. Otherwise, you need to take the exam by August 25, if at all possible, for future registration periods.
If you receive a Level I score or have yet to take the exam, you will not be able to register for a course with this prerequisite. You will have only one attempt this summer to take this exam, but you may retake it, if necessary, during the Fall midterm advising period for Spring courses.
Content of Exam: The exam is based on material usually found in a standard high school curriculum, at least through intermediate algebra. Your score will indicate your level of proficiency:
Level I – Basic proficiency prerequisite is not met by Part 1 and Review of Algebra, Math 055, is indicated.
Level II – Basic proficiency is met for courses with prerequisite Math 055 or equivalent. Part 2 of the exam is recommended.
Level III – Adequate preparation is determined for courses with prerequisite Math 115 or equivalent by Part 2 of the exam .
Academic Integrity: Consistent with Lewis & Clark's Academic Integrity Policy (see College Catalog, Policies and Procedures), your submission of this exam for evaluation affirms that you have followed the spirit and letter of this policy by working independently.
Directions for Taking the Exam: This is a timed exam in two 60-minute parts with only Part I required. There is ample time to complete the exam. We recommend that you use Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher on Windows, Safari 3.0 or higher on Macintosh or Firefox on either to access the exam.
