The runners will start in Tillamook, Oregon, go through Portland, cross Mt. Hood at the Wapanito Pass (3952 ft.), and then continue across the high desert of Eastern Oregon, traversing several passes of up to 5,200 feet. From there, the course will enter Idaho, where the team will head toward the Sawtooth Mountains, over the Galena Pass (8,700 feet), and down through Ketchum and Hailey before rejoining route 20 near Picabo. The runners will then pass the Craters of the Moon National Monument, go through Idaho Falls, and cross through the Targhee National Forest and over the Teton Pass (8429 ft.) before making their way down into Jackson Hole, Wyoming. After some sightseeing in the Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, the
runners will begin the second segment of the run by crossing the
Continental Divide at the Togwotee Pass (9658 ft.), running along the Wind River to Riverton, and then on to Casper. From there, the The runners will begin the final segment by heading toward northwestern Pennsylvania on rt. 20. Passing through Erie, they will then enter western New York and head on to Fredonia. Bypassing Buffalo, the group will pass through Rochester and Hamilton on their way to Cooperstown, home of the Baseball Hall of Fame. From there, the runners will head slightly north to rt. 20, passing through Schenectady on their way into western Massachusetts. The team will then traverse the Berkshires and head through Amherst en route to Hopkinton. Finally, the runners will rest up for one last night before finishing by following the Boston Marathon course into Boston.
