Welcome to the Mathematical Sciences Department Alumni Page.
You'll find here a listing of alumni, along with their e-mail
addresses and web addresses, if any. In addition, there is an "alumni
news" section where you might find out more about what your
classmates and other alumni are doing. For recent graduates, names
are followed by (M) for a mathematics degree or (CSMT) for a
mathematics and computer science degree. Those names marked with an
asterisk are those we have not been able to contact. If you have an
address for any of them let us know or just let them know about this
project. Also, if you would be willing to add some information about
yourself to this page, contact us at the following address:

"On graduation from high school in 1917, I received a scholarship to a number of colleges. I chose Albany College located in Albany, Oregon. There I met my future husband, Otto Lee Fox, who graduated the same year, 1920, with me. After receiving my Bachelors of Arts in Math and Science, I taught one year in Tangent High School. The next year I was married and we moved to Berkeley, California. Since then I have lived in California and never taught in high school again."
"My husband passed away in 1975 of a stroke. Three children
survived, two boys and a girl. Recently I moved to Auburn
California."
Posted 8/11/99
"My math degree was in combination with physics - math/physics major."
"With this degree following graduate work at the University of Oregon in Eugene and coaching/teaching at Springfield High School one year, I joined the faculty at the U. of O. as a physics instructor for one year. This provided a contact through Dr. Hobart Collius, a professor of physics at Lewis & Clark (Albany) and at U. of O., that led to employment with Weyerhauser Company in their Research Department Technical Center in Longview, Washington in the Applied Physics Section."
"A career of thirty years at Weyerhauser provided a number of other positions as Sales Engineer, Product Manager, Marketing/Merchandising Manager, New Products Manager for the Wood Products Division. This is follow-up to several products I helped develop in the Physics Research Department."
"This is what you can do with a math/physics degree."

The following was received from Vernon's step-son, Lou Gopal.
Vernon "just passed away on February 9th, 2001. He was 76 years
old. He retired from Boeing in 1989 after 35 years in the Engineering
department. Although he was born in Oregon, he moved to Seattle after
the war and spent the rest of his life up here. Aside from marrying
my mom and having me as a stepson, he had no children of his own. He
was a quiet man but one who had a passion for a lot of hobbies:
woodworking, photographer, rock hound and lapidarist, and even took
up trail riding on his Yamaha Enduro bike !"

"I do have a funny story to tell you. In my senior year at L&C
Elvie Fredrickson was head of the math dept. My last semester I had
turned in no homework. I did however, pass all the tests. I went to
see her about it and said, 'Bet you are surprised to see me come in.'
She said, 'No Jim, I expected you a lot sooner than this.' We
talked over my plans which were then firm to go to seminary when I
graduated from L&C. She knew I could do the math if I had to, but
that I had lost interest. We agreed that she would graduate me and I
would never go into mathematics and embarrass the college. She
was one great woman."

"I graduated in 1960 with a degree in Math and Physics. I worked for
the U.S. Naval Weapons Center at China Lake, CA from 1960 until 1980 in
the Aerothermochemistry Division of the Research Department. During that
time I earned an M.A. in Physics at UC, Davis and an M.S. in Engineering
and a PhD. in Chemical Engineering at the U. of Utah.
"In 1980 I resigned and went to the San Francisco Theological Seminary
and earned a M.Div. in 1983. I ahve been a pastor since that time. 18 of
those years I have been an iterim pastor serving 14 churches in that
capacity.
"Currently I am interim pastor at the Presbyterian Church of
Ketchikan, Alaska."

"I was graduated from L&C in '61 with majors in math and physics. I then went to work at China Lake as a mathematician,
working in the areas of software development and systems analysis. In August, '70 I entered Louisville Presbyterian
Theological Seminary and was graduated in '73. In July of that year I was ordained as a minister in what is now the
Presbyterian Church (USA). I served two congregations over a period of twenty-eight years and am now retired and living with
my wife, Donneta Middleton (L&C class of '61) in Findlay, Ohio. I preach about sixty percent of the time, enjoy meeting
friends (new and old) for dinner, help with household chores, and enjoy it all very much. Best of all I can say 'No!' when
ever the mood strikes and don't have the 24/7 responsibility of the active ministry."

"I was a student in 1958-62 with Dr. Frederickson. What ever
happened to her and some of my fellow classmates; namely Ward Plummer
and Dushan Pecka. They really gave me a run for the money. I'm afraid
I too am still looking for a profession other than computers which is
what I wound up in. I started as an analyst, then became a programmer
for the government at China Lake, after 4 years went to work at
American Airlines in New York on their brand new reservation system
called SABRE, later moved to California to work in the aerospace
industry and reencountered Dushan. I've recently retired in Arizona

"I have taught mathematics since 1962 either in the classroom or
tutoring. Presently I am teaching mathematics at North Salem High
School in Salem Oregon. Development of a discrete math course for
high school has been rewarding as students are working with
mathematical applications that are used today in the "real world." I
have also given numerous workshops for girls in mathematics and
school improvement issues both in Oregon and nationally. Guess that
sums up my professional experience."

"My name is Byron Prinzmetal and I graduated in 1966 with a major in math. I am now retired and if you want to know why I retired, I retired to go hiking. I am the chair of a hiking club in Southern California (www.hundredpeaks.org/hps)."
"So the question some of you maybe asking, how can a math major retire early, very early. First of all my math training taught me to think logically, see patterns, look for solutions to difficult problems, etc. I never used calculus or any of the other math subjects I learned at Lewis and Clark in my career, but I have used over and over again the things that were really taught & a love of learning, the ability to analyze and solve difficult problems, etc. Below is a summary of my career where the skills learned at Lewis and Clark paid handsome rewards."
1) MBA at University of Southern California
2) Infantry Officer-US Army (worked for the CIA in Viet Nam)
3) May Company California
a) Helped develop their point of sale register
b) Assistant Controller for general accounting, sales audit, etc.
c) Director of Systems Development (in charge of programming.)
4) Zodys Department Stores-VP of EDP (electronic data processing)
5) Candle Corporation (a large software development company)
a) VP-Chief Information Officer
b) VP-Strategic and Operational Planning
"As you all know, today's world is moving faster and faster. Those who have the ability to analyze, solve difficult problems, and who have a love of learning have the basic requirements for success &a major in math provides these foundations. Good luck."

"I was a 1968 B.S. graduate from Lewis & Clark with majors in Mathematics and Physics. After graduation I served 3 years as a Lieutenant in the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Corps conducting geophysical, oceanographic, and meteorological research in remote areas of the world. In 1968 I had received a graduate fellowship from the Atomic Energy Commission which I was able to activate in 1971. I received a M.S. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1972. Since 1973 I've been employed by the Power Systems business of the General Electric Company. I currently am Manager, Business Development for GE Power Systems and am engaged in leading acquisitions, joint ventures, and divestures throughout the world. I currently am engaged in such activities in Australia, Canada, Sweden, Italy, and the U.S. It's a fun job and the analytical skills I developed in Mathematics and the international perspective fostered by LC continue to serve me well though my technical career became a management/business career 20 years ago."

"My wife (Deanna), Son (Samuel, born 7/8/2001), and I live in Saratoga, Ca. I work for Cadence Design Systems in the Applications Engineering Team. After L&C, I spent 2 years at USC earning a BSEE. I joined TRW Electronics and Technology Group and did a coop program at USC to earn my MSEE. After spending 6 years doing IC design, I moved to Silicon Valley and joined a startup company of 11 people. After 3 years, the company went public. I subsequently joined another start-up company that was bought by Cadence. I still remember the excellent education I received from the great Math and Physics departments."
"After graduating in 1984, I went to The Institute of Optics of the School of Engineering and Applied Science of the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York. I think what happened is that I realized I am not a pure physicist and I am not a pure engineer. I'm an applied scientist. However, officially, I'm an optical engineer! The field of optics is very applied in the sense of making devices and components, but it also lends itself to applied mathematics. I like the mathematical description of light propagation through materials, lenses, waveguides, etc. Today, everything is designed using specialized engineering software packages and nobody writes their own unless they work for one of the companies that sells the software. A good optics person, though, is a whole lot better with mathematics than say a chemist. 'Mathematics is the glue.'"
"I live in Austin, Texas, which is known as the Heart Of Texas. Everything is HOT this and HOT that. Austin is very green. The city is covered with big pecan trees and big cedar bushes/trees. We also have a very nice lake nearby (Lake Travis) for swimming 8 months out of the year. I love the very blue sky that we often have here. (We don't have much perceptible air pollution.) It is hot, though, as in temperature. I like it that way. If I cannot live in Oregon, then I want the climate and nature to be very different. (I was born and raised in Portland.)"
"You can check out my corporate profile on the web page for the
company I work for:
http://www.radiantr.com/coreteam.html The field of optics is a
very hot field right now with optical-fiber communications growing.
The current buzz word is photonics and I'm more employable if I call
myself an optoelectronics engineer."

"Having been born and raised in Alaska and doing my undergraduate studies at LC in Oregon, I continued to work my way south after graduation. I lived in Los Angeles for two years and received a Masters in Biostatistics from UCLA's School of Public Health. I applied for and received a Rotary International Scholarship and got a second Masters degree (this one in Public Health - MPH) from the National Institute of Public Health in Mexico. I lived in Mexico City for 6 months and Cuernavaca for 7 months to complete that degree (all in Spanish!) Our group thesis (using principal components analysis) was published in Mexico's national public health journal (Salud Publica de Mexico)."
"Since then, I have returned to Alaska (always knew I would!). I worked for a few years as the Analyst/Programmer for the Alaska Fetal Alcohol Sydrome Prevention Project. I have worked in my present position, technically a Public Health Specialist, for almost five years now. I am the Coordinator and sole data analyst for the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System, or PRAMS. It's a program partially funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention out of Atlanta. My work has afforded me the opportunity to publish articles in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the American Journal of Public Health, the Journal of Adolescent Health, and the Maternal and Child Health Journal."
"On a more personal note, my husband, Mike, and I are parents of two wonderful boys- now both school age (my youngest just started kindergarten this year). Look me up if you're planning a trip north!"

"I first decided to major in math because I liked solving math problems and had done well in high school math classes. However, as I progressed through the program at Lewis and Clark, I realized that there was a much bigger reason for taking the classes. I was learning how to think logically and how to develop creative solutions to difficult problems-- skills I would benefit from in any endeavor."
"The classes were so challenging it was almost as if I could feel my brain stretching! Although this was almost overwhelming at times, it was also that much more rewarding when I finally hit upon a solution to a difficult problem. One example is the time that I spent hours and hours trying to come up with an answer to a question on one of Professor Schmidt's infamous take-home tests. I spent all evening thinking about it without coming up with a solution, only to wake up with it in my head! As usual, he had set it up so the answer, although far from obvious, was deceptively simple and eloquent."
"I have since graduated from one of the top five MBA programs in the nation, worked for two of the top five consumer goods marketing companies in the country, and run my own advertising business. I have also become a leading expert on a controversial topic; published two articles on this subject in a research journal; worked with some of the nation's leading healthcare experts concerned about the issue; and served as an information resource on the topic for reporters from the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, Salon Magazine, the Ladies Home Journal, and many other media outlets."

I mostly teach Algebra 1 as that is my favorite, but next year I'll take over the Algebra 2 Honors classes. I absolutely LOVE teaching and there's nothing else I'd rather be doing.
"In my spare time (?) I earned my Master's Degree in Secondary Education (with an emphasis on Using Computers in Instruction) from Cal State Northridge in May '98. It took me over 7 years since I was going to school mostly at night while teaching full time, but I made it! I don't plan on moving into another field of education but really just wanted the degree for my personal satisfaction (and of course a slight pay raise).
"I just bought my very own townhouse in June and am spending the

Good Times (a camp for kids aged 7-18 with cancer and their
siblings). It's a very rewarding experience and one I truly look
forward to. If you know of anyone in the L.A. area who might be
interested in volunteering for future summers, the camp is always
looking for volunteers. It's only a 9 day commitment. Just send them

Company is a professional theater that has been around for over
twenty years. We perform at the Edith Wharton Estate, known as The
Mount, in Lenox, MA. I've been here two years now working primarily
in the Education Program. I get to act in plays (I just finished a
production of "Richard III"), work with students (I directed a high
school production of "Hamlet" last fall), and work administratively
to keep the ed program running smoothly (a large challenge for a tiny
non-profit budget). I make very little money, live in company housing
(very sketchy), and am too busy to have any friends outside the

artistic work and administrative tasks. Also, to be working as an
actor, doing classical theater, and to be paid a living wage to do
it, is a rare feat."

The worst job was when I worked for 8 whole days at the Hoody's peanut factory in Beaverton. God, it was depressing to graduate from college and then get a job picking stones our of peanuts going by on the conveyor belt. But, hey, rent had to be paid."

After graduation Chris began working in the technical writing profession for System Integrators, Inc. After a few years in this area he found that the "politics and pace of the high-tech/technical writing industry mitigated against his remaining in the profession." Chris then used his technical knowledge at GTE Wireless in the customer service field. After the many stressful years in technical writing, he really enjoyed this new position. As he became more familiar with the customer service field he took on more responsibilities by taking a position with Allerderm Laboratories where he worked in both customer service and accounts receivable/order entry. He recently decided to further his accounting knowledge and data entry skills and left this position. He noted that "it is quite difficult to set any career goal(s) since he has never known for certain the work he has a passion for doing and which is, at the same time, useful to others."
What has his mathematics degree afforded me in my career to date?
He mentioned that has attention to details that others fail to
consider most of the time and reasoning and numerical powers that
become useful when learning to function in a new environment or
improving upon that environment.

a great deal of hiking. Following that I didn't really have any

9/93. I served in an infantry unit at Ft. Lewis Washington for just
over 2 years. The highlight of that horrible experience was spending
5 months in Guantanimo Bay, Cuba guarding cuban and panamanian
prisioners and psychiatric patients. After leaving the army I fell in
to a job supporting Windows 95 in Seattle Washington. Two years later
I started working for the Kent School District in Kent, Wa on their
