Recycling

Lewis & Clark recycles plastic, paper, and metal in commingled bins. Glass is recycled separately.

For information regarding other types of recycling or reuse opportunities (e.g. appliances, furniture, office supplies), please contact Amy Dvorak, Sustainability Director. Please also see the Metro’s Find a Recycler webpage.

Food Waste Collection & Composting

Lewis & Clark provides containers for food waste collection on campus. Cooked and uncooked food waste, including meat and bones, may be placed in the bins in addition to coffee filters and tea bags. No other non-food items may be placed in the food collection bins on campus. Food waste from the dining facilities is also collected. Plant material from our grounds is collected and composted on campus.

Things to leave out:
“Compostable” containers, non-approved compostable plastic bags, pet waste, animal bedding (including straw and chicken manure), animal carcasses from hunting and fishing waste, fireplace ashes, metal and glass, textiles, clothing, linens, shoes, household garbage, fast food wrappers, packaging, takeout containers and waxed paper, facial tissue.

Compost from Lewis & Clark College and the greater City of Portland area go to two different composting locations: Nature’s Needs in North Plains, operated by Recology, and Pacific Region Compost operated by Republic Services. Both locations process food waste into compost that is then sold back to the community.
