      Whitney Christensen JD ’14 recently started her own legal firm, Christensen Law, in Corvallis, Oregon. She specializes in three areas of law: business, estate planning, and financial distress. While she was attending Lewis & Clark Law School, Christensen worked with the Oregon Department of Justice and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

      Sarah Clement BA ’14, along with Micah Leinbach BA ’14, Julia Huggins BA ’13, and Sarra Wynn BA ’14, have launched a nonprofit organization called The BOAT (Bus for Outdoor Access and Teaching). Following a successful Indiegogo campaign, they plan to purchase and retrofit a bus with storage space, solar panels, and all manner of amenities, essentially creating a mobile classroom. The goal is to offer cheaper-than-average opportunities for youth education in the outdoors. For more information, see theboatbus.com.

      Peter Evalds JD ’14 has joined the Portland office of Garvey Schubert Barer as an associate. Evalds, who focuses on tax planning, tax controversy, and business transactions, has extensive experience in entity formation, 1031 exchanges, reorganizations, and mergers and acquisitions. Formerly a clerk for Judge Henry Breithaupt of the Oregon Tax Court, he earned an LLM in taxation from Georgetown University Law Center.

      Katie George BA ’14 was a participant in the Astoria (Oregon) Visual Arts artist-in-residence program. In the past, her work focused on realistic scientific illustrations, but more recently, she has worked in pyrography (wood burning), watercolor, oil, ink, and even pottery and sculpture. George hopes to capture the natural essence of a thing and to “remind the viewer of the importance of conservation, of the treasures of the natural world, and of what remains to be discovered.”

He holds an M.S. in criminal justice policy from the London School of Economics and a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science from Oregon State University.

      Lisa Kenn JD ’14, after two years as an associate with Kramer & Associates, has established a solo practice, Lisa Kenn Family Law, LLC. Her office is located at 1020 S.W. Taylor, Suite 880, Portland, Oregon. Kenn’s practice focuses on all aspects of domestic relations law, including divorce, custody, restraining orders, guardianships, third-party custody matters, and adoptions. She also represents parties in juvenile dependency cases.

      Brian Kernan JD ’14 joined the tort and product liability practice group of the Portland office of Gordon & Rees as an associate. Kernan has extensive experience representing general contractors, subcontractors, and architects in construction defect, breach of contract, and collections matters as well as representing manufacturers and distributors in product defect claims.

      Traveled to China with Tom Lindley, chair of Perkins Coie’s environment, energy, and resources practice, to provide pro bono assistance to the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI). Kerr, an associate at Perkins Coie, acted as a consultant on the development and implementation of environmental laws designed to address China’s environmental concerns.

      Sam Lehman BA ’14 lives in Vancouver, Washington. He currently works for Fisher Investments, where he is about to celebrate his fifth work anniversary. Lehman serves on the L&C Philanthropy Council and continues to attend campus events. He has recently taken several trips throughout the United States, including to Washington, D.C., and Key West, Florida.

      Micah Leinbach BA ’14 reports that the BOAT bus (www.theBOATbus.com), a nonprofit “wilderness program on wheels,” has successfully launched. They have completed two programs already and have a contract lined up for September 2019. BOAT’s board includes fellow L&C alums Julia Huggins BA ’13, Sarah Clement BA ’14, and Sarra Wynn BA ’14. Leinbach adds that they are interviewing some L&C students to be their first staff members in the fall. He says, “It’s been a hit in Denver so far–it seems like we’ve really found (and addressed) a pain point.” Leinbach is still manager of learning and development for Guild Education, which has been named Colorado’s fastest-growing start-up.

      Nik Mahapatra BA ’14 is a writer in New York City. A short film he wrote, SPF, premiered at the New York Indie Film Festival in February 2019. He is an inaugural member of LIT Council, an intensive program for male playwrights of color. Mahapatra is currently developing several new plays, and he’s also a member of a writers residency group at Gingold Theatre Company.

      Jeremiah Rigsby JD ’14 was selected as chief of staff for CareOregon. Previously, Rigsby was CareOregon’s director of public policy and regulatory affairs, working extensively with health care policymakers in Salem and Washington, D.C. He has also served as the senior legislative assistant for U.S. Representative Kurt Schrader (2009–2011) and U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar (2006–2009).

      Nathan Romine BA ’14 works in Los Angeles at the Immigrant Defenders Law Center, where he assists unaccompanied minors in adjusting to life in the United States. Most recently, he coordinated representation for families who were separated at the border. In his spare time, he’s out in Yosemite and Red Rocks, climbing and romping around.

      Nicole Schaefer JD ’14, a Portland-based family law attorney and entrepreneur, has founded Crescendo Legal, a law firm that will specialize in music, creative business, and art law. Schaefer is founder and CEO of several law-related services that include Let’s Untie the Knot, a divorce website that enables couples to control their own uncontested divorce from start to finish, as well as Your Lawyers Online, a virtual law firm of online legal providers specializing in divorce, probate, business, and animal law, and its affiliate website OnlineRecordExpungement.com. “Technology has changed [the legal landscape], providing clients the opportunity to shop for services when they used to just head down the street to the nearest law firm,” says Schaefer. “I want to enable and empower clients, as well as future and current professionals, to do law differently, from purchasing textbooks to finding the services that work best for them, when and how they want it.” Schaefer has certificates in animal law and criminal law and procedure and extensive experience in family court procedures, forming corporations, and estate planning.       Jordan Schoonover JD ’14 married Jay Phillipe on June 26, 2016, in Bend, Oregon. Judge Michael Mosman officiated and attendees included Professor Jim Oleske and 2014 alumni Jake Brooks, Alyssa Mastic, Ben Saver, Bridgett Shephard, and Rhylee Smith. “We all were in the Yellow Pod during our 1L year, and Jim was our torts professor,” says Schoonover.

      Jake Simonds BA ’14, an actor, writer, and performer, has spent the last year touring his solo show …like nobody’s watching. He’s made stops at Fringe Festivals in New Orleans, Australia, and New York City and has plans to take the show to Ottowa. The show, which Simonds performs accompanied only by a chair, a rope, and a ball named Spalding, explores isolation and loneliness.
