ONE L&C Statement about Black Lives Matter
The ONE L&C Employee Engagement Committee is charged with promoting a sense of community and belonging for employees of Lewis & Clark through engagement, learning, and service opportunities. Recent tragedies and subsequent protests underscore that we must do better to fight against racism, and promote equity and inclusivity. In support of the well-being of our entire community, ONE L&C pledges to provide educational opportunities for ourselves and community members about the greater issue of systemic racism and how our own LC traditions and practices impede our progress to promote community and a sense of belonging for Black and Indigenous and People of Color. We recognize that we must first look inward by examining our own traditions and ways of being as the beginning to creating change in our society and Lewis & Clark.
We pledge to take actions which contribute to the work needed to dismantle the systems of oppression that continue to exist in our community by:
- Organizing and facilitating learning communities around the issues of racism; our first learning opportunity will be reading Me and My White Supremacy (Layla F. Saad) and supporting discussions on this work
- Partnering with the Student Leadership and Service to offer social justice volunteer and community building opportunities
- Partnering with the Office of Equity and Inclusion to encourage antiracist discussions
- Promoting the use of campus resources such as the IME Community Development Toolkit for community education on topics supporting equity and inclusion
- Advocating for fair and equitable hiring practices
- Participating in and supporting ongoing anti-bias training for faculty and staff
