“There is a critical need for a highly educated Native citizenry. Native scholars need to possess understandings of their work in the context of specific and global Tribal interests. Beyond mainstream education, Tribal scholars must possess skills to articulate and address disciplinary issues in terms of Sovereignty and laws bearing on Tribes and customs.”

-Roy H. Sampsel (Choctaw and Wyandotte Tribes)

The IWOK Summer Academy is a 2 week, residential program created to give 25 Native High School Students an introduction to the College Experience. Students will receive intense SAT Preparation fromKaplan Test Prep as well as an introduction to the Liberal Arts through a Native Lens–they will follow a curriculum built upon the scholarship of Indigenous Academicians from Lewis & Clark and beyond.  Students will engage with Lewis & Clark Professors about these readings, which will also serve as a basis for their possible future studies and careers as Indigenous Scholars themselves.

Families of participants will also be encouraged to help support students’ future college aspirations and will also include a day of mentoring for younger students from Portland Public School’s Indian Education Project Summer Academic and Cultural Enrichment Program as well as a joint afternoon of education with theJourney’s Program of the Oregon College of Art & Craft. The Academy is designed from the perspective that Native identities exist within the context of the family, the Tribe(s) of origin, and the larger community in which an individual lives.

This program is FREE for Native Students who are invited to attend.  To be considered please fill out the required forms (below) and return them to our office.

The 2012-2013 Summer Academy is made possible through a generous grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
