Learning Analytics and Big Data

In the past year, a new edtech term, learning analytics, is increasingly being discussed along with the Big Data movement in education. SoLAR defines learning analytics as the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimizing learning and the environments in which it occurs. We are increasingly able to mine the data trail students leave online in learning management systems like Moodle or other public course web pages. How might you tap into this store of data to improve your own teaching? What definition of effective learning are used when looking for meaningful patterns in this data? What are the implications for broader educational policy and privacy?
