7 Things You Didn’t Know About the Graduate School
In 2014, the graduate school celebrated its 30th anniversary. Here are seven things you may not have known about the history of education and counseling preparation at Lewis & Clark.

Before Architect Pietro Belluschi went on to win national acclaim, he fulfilled his first solo commission by designing the Corbett Estate. In 2000, when the graduate school moved into its new home, the estate housed offices and classrooms. -
From 1951 to 2013, graduate-level students could enroll in a nationally prestigious music program. Many faculty members doubled as symphony principals, composers, and world music specialists. -
Between 1952 and 2000, Lewis & Clark housed one of the nation’s top programs for teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing. It earned nearly $4 million in federal grants and graduated more than 800 students, many of whom went on to become teachers, administrators, or support personnel at schools for deaf students. -
Housed in the Albany Quadrangle on the undergraduate campus, the education department attracted more Lewis & Clark students than any other major. By early 1970, a third of students graduated with a major in elementary education, or completed the requirements for the Oregon Teaching Certificate in Secondary Education. -
In 1984, the Oregon Writing Project launched to support writing education that gives students a voice and power over their own lives. The project has now expanded to include a Teaching of Writing Certificate Program. -
In 1985, Lewis & Clark was the only liberal arts college in the nation to receive a grant from the U.S. Office of Educational Research and Improvement to examine and apply cutting-edge research on teacher training. That research was foundational for the Master of Arts in Teaching curriculum, which emphasizes yearlong internships in Portland-area schools. -
A $4.5 million gift from the Mary Stuart Rogers Foundation, the largest ever to a school of education in Oregon, made possible the graduate school’s move in 2000 to its new home on the graduate campus (formerly the Corbett Estate).
