Assistant professor Andrae Brown discusses violence prevention and gangs on OPB

Andrae Brown, assistant professor of counseling psychology, discusses violence prevention and gangs in Portland on OPB’s Think Out Loud.

Andrae Brown, assistant professor of counseling psychology, recently weighed in on gang violence in Portland on the OPB radio show Think Out Loud. He urged listeners to think carefully about how violence perpetrated by gang-associated people is often not gang-related, it’s often about interpersonal issues. The quick leap to judgement in categorizing violence such as this as “gang violence” often reinforces cultural and racial stereotypes that are harmful to communities. Brown has worked extensively with community organizations on violence prevention efforts, especially with men and boys.
