Class Notes - 1990s

1990

Gina Angelone ‘90 and her husband, Jon Larson, live in Las Vegas. After a 10-year law enforcement career, she left her position as crime analyst for the Henderson (Nevada) Police Department to become a full-time mom. Angelone still plays around with mathematical equations and wants to get back into art in the near future. She wonders, “Does anyone remember how to solve a polynomial equation to the ‘nth degree for x?”

Scott Hahn ‘90, MAT ‘92 moved to Tunis, Tunisia, after living for two years in Caracas, Venezuela. He teaches middle school mathematics at the American Cooperative School of Tunis. Hahn first traveled to Africa in 1990; with this trip 15 years later, he says he’s there to stay.

Derek Larson ‘90 and Theresa “Trece” Anderson ‘91 live in St. Cloud, Minnesota. They both work at College of Saint Benedict/Saint John’s University, where Larson teaches history and chairs the environmental studies program, and Anderson serves as an academic adviser to multicultural students.

1991

Ted Lew JD ‘91 is a partner in the law firm of Welch, Bruun & Green. The firm handles workers’ compensation, social security, personal injury, and employment law claims.

David Lord ‘91 teaches fifth grade at Metzger Elementary School in Tigard. He commutes 28 miles round-trip by bicycle every day from North Portland. 

Jim Meakin ‘91 and Loren Waxman ‘88 have teamed up to form Waxman and Associates, a development firm that focuses on urban infill projects. Their first commercial project in Portland transformed an old metal-plating facility into the Sellwood Lofts, which include 10 two-story townhouses, 5 lofts, and the Sellwood branch of Multnomah County Library. 

Phylis Myles JD ‘91 is director of career services at Willamette University College of Law.

Laura Wackwitz ‘91 completed an MA in communication studies at Northern Illinois University at DeKalb and a PhD in mass communication at the University of Georgia at Athens. She has held faculty positions at the University of North Dakota; Wayne State University in Detroit; and most recently, Oregon State University. She now lives in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, with her husband, Larry Miller, two dogs, and a cat. For information on her recent book, see “Bookshelf.”

1992

Genet Erickson Adam ‘92 received her master’s degree in teaching from Queens College in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1995, and moved to Singapore. She now teaches elementary expatriate students at United World College of South East Asia. She is also a primary-years program trainer for International Baccalaureate Organization in the Asia Pacific region.

Lisa Cianciulli ‘92 lived and worked in Dallas for a few years following graduation before moving permanently to Italy. For 10 years, she worked as an information technology consultant for Electronic Data Systems Italia in Rome. Last year, she decided to start her own business renting out her family vacation home on the Island of Capri. She also organizes cooking and wine-tasting courses. Jennifer DeWald ‘92, JD ‘98 lives in Upper Hutt, New Zealand, just north of Wellington (on the North Island) and works as a tax consultant for Ernst & Young. She plans to draw on her previous experience as an Indian law attorney to provide legal assistance to the Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand, as well as to other clients.

Ruthe Farmer ‘92 manages a national engineering initiative for middle school girls out of the Girl Scouts headquarters office in Manhattan. She lives on the Upper East Side and loves New York City.

Franz Junga ‘92 is chef/partner at Il Fornaio, an Italian restaurant in Portland. After taking odd jobs around the world, Junga returned to Portland, where he graduated with honors from the Western Culinary Institute.

Roslyn Kitchen JD ‘92 is a partner in the law firm of Cohen Silverman Rowan in Boulder, Colorado.

Jeremy Tejirian ‘92 is an associate planner with the Oakland, California, office of Pacific Municipal Consultants.

1993

Charles Cameron M.P.A. ‘93 retired after 19 years as the Washington County administrator. He and his wife, Michelle, plan to take two years off to build their dream home in central Oregon before taking up volunteering.

Richard Derrick ‘93 transferred to Salt Lake City in July 2005 to work for the U.S. department of Defense and L-3 Communications, a company that specializes in unmanned aerial vehicles, satellite information, and data links. He previously spent three years in Ontario, Canada, where he worked on projects involving light armored vehicles for the defense department.

Joshi Linn ‘93 has been promoted to second vice president, investments, for Smith Barney Citigroup in Savannah, Georgia. He has worked there for 10 years.

Bernhard Masterson ‘93 and Le Huynh ‘93, MAT ‘97 recently completed their three-year project of building a cob-and-straw bale house outside Estacada.

Per Olson JD ‘93 is a shareholder in the law firm of Hoevet Boise & Olson. The firm specializes in criminal defense in state and federal court.

1994

Amy Beacom ‘94 is finishing her PhD in organizational psychology at Columbia University. She and her husband, Mike DiMezza, live in the Bed-Stuy neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. They are busy restoring two beautiful brownstones. They have no kids, but they do have one grumpy cat.

Emily Donald Brown ‘94 earned her PhD in archaeology from Columbia University in 2005. She then left the National Park Service to start Aspen CRM Solutions, her own cultural resource management company, and High Desert Images, her own online photographic print company.

Michael Colbach JD ‘94 has relocated his law practice to S.W. Madison in Portland. He specializes in plaintiff’s personal injury law.

Eileen Eakins JD ‘94 is a shareholder in the law firm of Jordan Schrader. Her practice focuses on local government and municipal law, employment law, and general business law.

Denise Lukins JD ‘94, along with Juliet Laycoe Hagley JD ‘98 and Steven Bogdon, established the law firm Laycoe, Lukins & Bogdon in Vancouver, Washington. Lukins practices animal law, bankruptcy, business law, and real estate litigation.

Donna Perkins McDonald ‘94 was promoted to senior production coordinator for Russell Investment Group in Tacoma, Washington. She is responsible for editing and publishing marketing collateral that targets U.S. institutional investors and members of Russell’s U.S. distribution network. She is taking classes at the University of Washington to obtain her certificate in editing.

Mitchell Milby JD ‘94 has started his own law firm, Schweizer Milby, in Dallas, Texas. He practices commercial litigation, labor and employment law, and intellectual property litigation. Milby has been a special agent with the San Francisco division of the FBI and a criminal prosecutor for the city of Dallas. He has also served as in-house counsel for the Dallas Police Department.

Patrick O’Neal ‘94 started his own advertising consulting business and does a lot of work for TBWA\Chiat\Day in both their Los Angeles and New York offices. He works on brands like Apple, Skittles, Starburst, Nextel, and Pedigree.

Steve Shropshire JD ‘94, a water law attorney for Jordan Schrader, was named one of Portland Business Journal’s “Forty Under 40” for 2005. He is a member of the law school’s Alumni Association Board of Directors. 

Dion Michaels West ‘94 graduated from the University of Colorado School of Law in 2003. She now clerks for Judge Joseph E. Meyer III in Denver. 

Anne Whatley JD ‘94 moved from Oregon to California in 1997, and her small law firm has grown steadily over the years. She is now based in downtown Martinez, California, just a few steps from the courthouse. The firm handles primarily family law with some criminal defense.

1995

Melissa Arne ‘95, a criminalist who excels in fingerprint identification, was named civilian employee of the year for the second year in a row by the Gresham Police Department. 

Patrick Balducci ‘95 is a principal research scientist in the Portland office of Battelle Memorial Institute. Following graduation, Balducci was with the Oregon Department of transportation before moving to Washington, D.C., where he worked for Cambridge Systematics. He is now finishing a master’s degree in applied environmental economics from the University of London and is conducting research in transportation economics for Battelle. He has two children, Hannah, 8, and Anthony, 6.

Bill Burgess M.P.A. ‘95 was elected clerk of Marion County in 2005. He was a pharmacist for 27 years at Oregon State Hospital and a Salem city councilor from 1990 to 1998.

Carly Henderson ‘95, MA ‘02 is the middle school counselor at the International School of Prague, Czech Republic. Before moving to Prague, she was the elementary school counselor at the International School of Tanganyika in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, for three years.

Bal Joshi ‘95 is the founder of Thamel, a Web site that enables Nepali expatriates to send money and gifts to their loved ones in Nepal. The business is doing so well that Joshi started Thamel International, which will develop similar e-commerce sites for expatriates from Africa, India, and Mexico.

Haly Warren Lewis ‘95 and her husband, Bryan, own an engineering software company and market their products internationally. They have two sons, Mitchell, 6, and Mason, 4. The family lives in Vancouver, Washington, where they have a house on three acres with a large garden and a flock of chickens. Lewis says, “Yep, I’ve become a chicken farmer. Imagine that!”

Laurie Miller ‘95 recently joined Premera Blue Cross as a curriculum designer for technical training. In June 2005, she graduated from Seattle University with a master’s degree in adult education and training. She and her husband, Kunga Lama, a Tibetan she met when traveling and teaching in India in 1998, live in Everett, Washington.

Kathyrn Nickoloff MAT ‘95 is the principal of Margaret Scott Elementary School in Portland.

Kristin Smith Rueber ‘95 and her husband, Scott, have relocated to the Washington, D.C., area. After living in Connecticut for two years and hating it thoroughly, they welcomed the change.

Eric Swenson M.P.A. ‘95 is the principal of French Prairie Middle School in Woodburn.

Katherine Vogt ‘95 lives in Chicago and writes for American Medical News.

Garen Cornoyer Weitman ‘95 married Jay Weitman ‘95 at Agnes Flanagan Chapel in 1992. Jay pursued a career in law enforcement. Over the years, he has worked in the Office of Campus Safety at Lewis & Clark and for the police department in West Linn. He now works as a patrol sergeant in the Lake Oswego Police Department. Garen recently received her PhD in clinical psychology from Pacific University in Forest Grove. She is completing her postdoctoral residency at Lifeworks Northwest, a community-based mental health service in Washington County. By fall 2006, she hopes to have her own practice as a licensed clinician. The Weitmans live in Lake Oswego and enjoy gardening, boating, fishing, hiking, and snow skiing.

Jon West ‘95 is working on his doctorate in physical therapy at the University of Colorado Health Services Center. He’s on track to graduate in May 2007.

1996

Henry Alvarez III M.P.A. ‘96 is president and CEO of the San Antonio (Texas) Housing Authority.

Jonathan Auld ‘96, MAT ‘99 is pursuing a second master’s degree in nursing at the University of Portland.

Ever Carradine ‘96 lives in Los Angeles and plays press secretary Kelly Ludlow on the ABC television series Commander in Chief.

Chris Lee ‘96 completed medical school at the University of Washington School of Medicine in 2003. He expects to finish his residency in anesthesiology in 2007.

Sonia Montalbano JD ‘96 has a costarring role in the independent documentary Reality Check. She also served as an associate producer on the film, as well as its story editor.

Tom Patton JD ‘96 is an associate with the law firm of Lehner & Rodrigues. He brings to the firm significant trial experience as a former deputy district attorney, corporate counsel for May Trucking Company, and an insurance defense litigator.

Matt Simms ‘96 teaches art in Auckland, New Zealand.

Mike Toschi ‘96 and his trio, At the Spine, performed a nine-week U.S. tour, which included Portland and other West Coast cities. The “Take It to the Red States Tour” also played with and served as the backup band for Colin Spring.

1997

Tracy Rodda Chatters ‘97 taught for five years at Natomas Charter School in Sacramento, California, before opening It’s a Grind Coffee House with her husband, Jake Chatters ‘97. 

Jim Drennan ‘97 worked on a commercial fishing boat after graduating from Lewis & Clark. He then completed the fire protection program at Portland Community College, moved to Lake Tahoe, and eventually became a firefighter for the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department in 2002. He is engaged to Jennifer Ellis, an emergency room nurse; they plan to marry this summer. For those who remember, Drennan can always be found in the summer at Echo Lake.

Amy Brose Mendenhall ‘97 graduated from the Oregon College of Oriental medicine in 2004. She and her husband went on a two-month sailing adventure and returned to Oregon to start a life outside of academia. Mendenhall says she is finally writing the syllabi for her life. Her husband, a family doctor, works in Newberg, and she is a licensed acupuncturist with her own clinic in Sherwood.

Mary “Amelia” Norfleet ‘97 is moving back to her home state of Colorado after nine years in Los Angeles. She and her husband, David Dorn, an architect and fellow Colorado native, just bought their first home.

Jorge Sega ‘97 received a master’s degree in telematics from the Universidad Rafael Belloso Chac’n in Maracaibo, Venezuela, in 2004. Since April 1999, he has worked as an information technology project coordinator for Grupo Panorama–Organization Rescue Humboldt in Venezuela.

Selim Star ‘97 lives with his wife, Hallie, and 4-year-old daughter, Hennessy, near Philadelphia. He graduated from Rutgers School of Law in May 2005.

1998

Melissa Boge JD ‘98 is an associate with Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt. She specializes in business and intellectual property.

Thomas Garza JD ‘98 was appointed to the board of directors of the Oregon Mediation Association. He is also a mediator with the Portland Independent Police Review. Garza lives in Corvallis with his wife, Andrea, and son, Mateo.

Juliet Laycoe Hagley JD ‘98, along with Denise Lukins JD ‘94 and Steven Bogdon, established the law firm Laycoe, Lukins & Bogdon in Vancouver, Washington.

Rita Ramstad MAT ‘98 won the 2003 Oregon Book Award for her collection The Play of Dark and Light, her first full-length collection of poetry. Her poem “Night Beach” was selected by Poetry in Motion for display on Portland TriMet buses and MAX trains. 

Terry Tassin Jr. JD ‘98 is a shareholder in the law firm Scarborough, McNeese, O’Brien & Kilkenny. Tassin specializes in all aspects of estate and trust administration, guardianship and conservatorships, and federal estate and Oregon inheritance taxation.

Matthew Whitman JD ‘98 is an associate in the law firm Cartwright & Associates.

Nadine Wolff ‘98 teaches math at the University of Hawaii.

1999

Evan Elken ‘99 quit his tech job five years ago to become a road-bike racer. In 2004, he won the Memorial Day weekend Ecology Center Classic in Missoula, Montana, finished third at the national championships, and finished eighth at the Olympic trials. “It’s been way better than sitting in a cube for the past four years,” he told VeloNews magazine. 

Dielle Iannantuano MAT ‘99 is a chemistry teacher who recently received National Board certification. She is the only teacher at Tualatin High School with that distinction.

Andy LeTourneau ‘99 is pursuing a new career in Montessori education and is an avid cyclist.

Chris Schulze ‘99 teaches seventh-grade science at Sunridge Middle School in Pendleton.
