Fulbright Distinguished Chair Award to Jane Hunter

Jane Hunter has been selected as a 2012-13 Fulbright Scholar and will pursue her project, “Grounding the Liberal Arts: Critical Thinking Through American Studies” while in China.

Jane Hunter, Associate Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and Professor of History, has been selected as a 2012-13 Fulbright U.S. Scholar. This Distinguished Chair award, one of three to China, will allow Jane to spend her upcoming sabbatical teaching history at Sichuan University in Chengdu, the People’s Republic of China.  Encompassing two areas of her expertise and experience, the title of Jane’s proposed project is “Grounding the Liberal Arts: Critical Thinking Through American Studies.” Dr. Hunter will teach courses in American studies to Chinese undergraduates and graduate students in the coming academic year, and plans to model the liberal arts perspective by “exposing students to a pedagogy that is interactive, student-centered, and evidence-based.” There is a growing interest in the liberal arts model of education in China, and Jane will be in a position to educate and encourage students and colleagues as they explore this curricular vision.  Also worth noting is that this significant achievement–a Fulbright Distinguished Chair award–follows a previous Fulbright-supported year teaching in Shanghai in 2003-04.
