Seeking to find workable and sustainable solutions to Oregon’s natural resource issues, former Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber announced the creation of the Kitzhaber Center at Lewis & Clark Law School in August.

“Our current natural resource policy-making structure has failed us. It cannot produce long-term sustainable solutions,” says Kitzhaber. “I want this new center to look at creative ways to address natural resource issues in Oregon and the West that are not inhibited by bureaucratic paralysis or driven solely by stakeholder politics.”

The center’s first project will focus on developing sustainable forest management practices on public forest lands. Many of the center’s projects will be done in partnership with the law school’s Natural Resources Law Institute.
