Class Notes 1960s

1960

Arthur Spencer ’60 has worked as a librarian, archivist, and researcher for the Oregon Historical Society and BOORA architects in Portland for over 30 years. He is a member of the steering committee of Loaves & Fishes, a program that serves hot meals to senior citizens and shut-ins. In addition, he writes a monthly column for the newsletter of St. Mark’s Anglican Church and works as a counting board supervisor during Multnomah County elections.

1962

William W. Barendrick Jr. ’62 has been named senior vice president of the Asset Services Division at Ashforth Pacific. He oversees the company-owned portfolio and works to acquire new third-party parking and property-management accounts. For the last 12 years, he worked for LaSalle Investment management, overseeing real estate investments for the Oregon Public Employees Retirement Fund. 

Richard W. Ditewig ’62 lives in San Francisco and has worked for the U.S. Department of Education since 1978. He enjoys playing the organ in church.

1963

Donald K. Chilcote ’63 retired in August 2001 after 38 years with the Boy Scouts of America. He was human resources director for the organization’s western region, which includes 60 councils in 18 states and Japan. Don and his wife, Ann, are in the process of relocating to the Portland area from Phoenix.

Larry Zgonc ’63 retired in June after teaching music at Mt. Hood Community College for 31 years. One hundred and fifty of his former students are teaching music in schools in Oregon and Washington.

1966

Carolyn Meaney ’66 teaches in Washington’s White Salmon Valley School District.

1967

Louise Evans Hall ’67 lives with her husband on five acres near Hollister, California.

1968

Leicester “Les” Longden ’68 edited The Ecumenical Theologian: Essays of Albert C. Outler, Volume 7, in the Albert Outler Library (Bristol Books, 2001). Longden is a professor of evangelism and discipleship at the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary.

Robert Oatfield ’68 is an interventional cardiologist in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. As part of an informal delegation to the Middle East, he traveled with former U.S. Senator Jim Abourezk. They met with Lebanese President Emile Lahood, Foreign Minister Mahmoud Hammoud, and Prime Minister Farik Harari in Beirut. In Damascus, the group had meetings with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Foreign Minister Farouk Shara.

1969

Wes Bigham Jr. ’69 recently retired after teaching and coaching football and track in Washington and Oregon for 33 years.

Susan Ettinger Harless ’69 is a donor-services officer for the Oregon Community Foundation in Bend. Harless has worked with nonprofit groups and donors for the last 23 years.

Jo Ann Staebler ’69 is working toward a master of divinity degree at Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Virginia. She expects to graduate in 2003, one month after her daughter Joanna graduates from Lewis & Clark College.
