Lewis & Clark earns presidential honor for community service

For the second time, Lewis & Clark has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).

For the second time, Lewis & Clark has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).

The college is one of only 113 institutions in the country—and the only one in Oregon—earning the recognition of Honor Roll with Distinction for 2013. In 2010, Lewis & Clark was one of 511 institutions named to the honor roll.

The Community Service Honor Roll honors a college or university for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement. Lewis & Clark has made service a priority, creating the Center for Career and Community Engagement (3CE) to give students the chance to engage, learn, and lead through ongoing and one-time service, immersion programs, and academic civic engagement. Also reflected in the honor are hours contributed to service in schools and mental health agencies by the Lewis & Clark Graduate School of Education & Counseling, and the work of the new community counseling clinic.

“We value active participation, from attending local street fairs to volunteerism and community-based research,” said Minda Heyman, director of 3CE. “This honor serves as a reminder of what we already know—that powerful relationships and social capital are crucial components for community building and collective action locally, nationally, and globally.”
