2000

Susan Jane Brown JD was named a member of the Planning Rule Federal Advisory Committee, which is charged with providing guidance and recommendations on the implementation of the new U.S. Forest Service Planning Rule. She will represent conservation organizations and watershed associations. Brown is a staff attorney at the Western Environmental Law Center in Portland.

Román Hernández JD received DuPont’s J. Michael Brown Award, which honors a member of DuPont’s Minority Counsel Network for increasing and promoting diversity in the legal profession. Hernández also received the Ohtli award, the highest honor bestowed by the Mexican government on a non-Mexican citizen, for contributing to the empowerment of Mexican and Mexican-American communities in the United States. He is a shareholder with Schwabe Williamson & Wyatt.

Leslie McAdam JD was honored with a California State Bar President’s Pro Bono Service Award for her work with Santa Clara Valley Legal Aid, which provides free legal assistance to rural Ventura County’s underserved population. She has been involved with the organization since 2009. McAdam is an attorney with Ferguson Case Orr Paterson in Ventura County, California.

Trung Tu JD was recognized as a 2012 Rising Star in Oregon Super Lawyers. He is a partner with McEwen Gisvold.

Jules Bailey BA is in his third year in the Oregon House of Representatives. He is one of three house members on the joint Ways and Means Natural Resources Subcommittee, which makes budgets for natural resource agencies as well as the Oregon State
University Extension Service, Experiment Station, and Forest Research Laboratory.
A Democrat, Bailey chairs the House Energy and Environment Committee. See Marriages and Unions.

Dylan Cernitz JD was recognized as a 2012 Rising Star in Oregon Super Lawyers. He is an associate with Gevurtz Menashe.

Andrew Daily BA completed his PhD at Rutgers University in 2011 with a dissertation on intellectuals and decolonization in the French Caribbean after World War II. He joined the Department of History at the University of Memphis as an assistant professor of French and world history.

Akira Heshiki JD received the Oregon State Bar President’s Affirmative Action Award for 2012. She is an attorney with Standard Insurance in Portland.

Elizabeth Howard JD was recognized as a 2012 Rising Star in Oregon Super Lawyers. She is a partner with Dunn Carney.

Paul Trinchero JD was recognized as a 2012 Rising Star in Oregon Super Lawyers. He is a litigator with Garvey Schubert Barer.

2002

Major Bryan Libel JD attended the U.S. Army JAG Corps School in Charlottesville, Virginia, and received his LLM in military law. Libel has worked full time for the Oregon Guard since 2004 and has been chief of its civil administrative law section since 2008.

Ben Patinkin BA announced the launch of Patinkin Research Strategies, focusing on “public opinion research and communications strategy for Democratic candidates, issue advocacy groups, labor unions, nonprofit organizations, and progressive businesses.” Previously at Grove Insight, Patinkin worked as a lead strategist on advocacy efforts, individual candidate campaigns, and ballot measure campaigns. Jason Stanford BA ’92, Carrie Wynkoop BA ’99, and Meaghan Lamarre BA are part of the launch as political consultants.

Megan Brown JD was recognized with the 2012 DePaul Community Resources Women of Achievement Award, in the category of law. Brown focuses on medical malpractice matters as an associate with Gentry Locke Rakes & Moore’s plaintiffs practice group in Roanoke, Virginia.

Dan Eller JD received the 2012 Mentor of the Year Award from the New Tax Lawyer Committee of the Oregon State Bar Taxation Section. Eller is a shareholder at Schwabe Williamson & Wyatt.

Elizabeth Welch JD is president of Portland’s Peninsula School’s Parent-Teacher Association. She is an attorney with Kohlhoff & Welch.

2005

Diana Bob JD was elected president of the Northwest Indian Bar Association for 2012–13. Bob is a staff attorney in the Lummi Nation Office of the Reservation Attorney. She works on matters relating to land use, natural resources, water rights, and other issues with local governments, Washington, and the United States.

Parna Mehrbani JD was named an Up and Coming Lawyer by the Oregon Daily Journal of Commerce for the second consecutive year. She is a member of Lane Powell’s intellectual property practice group.

Chris Parnell JD was recognized as a 2012 Rising Star in Oregon Super Lawyers. Parnell is of counsel in Dunn Carney’s bankruptcy and creditors’ rights practice group.

2006

Chad Colton JD was recognized as a 2012 Rising Star in Oregon Super Lawyers. He is an associate with Markowitz, Herbold, Glade & Mehlhaf.

Jennifer Coughlin JD appeared on the Today show in October 2012 with her client, a rape victim, to speak out about a case that was unusual and unprecedented. Coughlin is an attorney with Brothers Hawn & Coughlin in Bend, Oregon.

Elisa Dozono JD was named chair of the Oregon Lottery Commission by Governor John Kitzhaber. Dozono is a partner at Miller Nash, where her practice focuses on business litigation and government relations.

Katie Johnson JD was selected to serve on the City Club of Portland Long-Term Research Study Committee on Air Quality Regulation in the Portland Metropolitan Area. Johnson is an associate with McEwen Gisvold, and her practice focuses on real estate, business, and construction litigation.

Tracy “TJ” Harrison BA works on a cooperatively managed subsistence homestead and demonstration farm. She teaches gardening, food preservation, fiber arts, basketry, and other ancestral and homestead skills at the farm and around the country. She and her farm mates are working on a book about how to live a more balanced and fulfilling life titled The Bridge: Learning to Be Human Again.

Dawson Law B.A. recently celebrated his one-year anniversary of living and working in Poland. After Polish language training in Washington, D.C., he arrived in Poland for his second tour in the Foreign Service, a welcome change of scenery from Khartoum, Sudan. He is serving as staff assistant to the U.S. ambassador to Poland.

Yoona Park JD was recognized as a 2012 Rising Star in Oregon Super Lawyers. She is an associate at Stoll Berne.

Ben Schifman BA recently graduated from Columbia Law School and is working as an attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice in the Environmental and Natural Resources Division in Washington, D.C.

Kaori Tanabe JD received the Oregon State Bar Oregon New Lawyers Division Member Service Award for 2012. Tanabe is an attorney with Stephens Margolin in Portland.

Duke Tufty JD is president of the Multnomah Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section and serves as an MBA director. He is an alcohol regulatory attorney at Davis Wright Tremaine in Portland.

Yarrow Ulehman BA completed her MEd with Antioch University in June 2012 and is in her first year as a middle school language arts/social studies teacher in Seattle.

Grace Uwagbae BA was appointed constituent relations manager by Portland Mayor Charlie Hales. She is in charge of public accessibility to and responsiveness of City Hall. She also worked for former Portland Mayor Sam Adams.

Stephanie Beechem BA completed her MA in English at the University of Washington. She then worked her way up from the City of Seattle’s Office of Economic Development and Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs to an internship at the White House Office of Media Affairs. She is now a researcher in the White House Office of Communications.

Amber Case BA, trustee, was recognized as one of Portland Business Journal’s 40 under the age of 40 for 2013. Cofounder of Geoloqi, which was recently sold to Esri, Case has made innovations in location-aware mobile applications.

Tate Justesen JD was recognized as a 2012 Rising Star in Oregon Super Lawyers. He is an associate attorney at Stahancyk, Kent & Hook.

Jessica McConnell J.D was recognized as a 2012 Rising Star in Oregon Super Lawyers. She is an associate with Greene & Markley.

Andrew Naify BA, the heir of Beers Books in Sacramento, will assume general oversight over the business. For more than three years, he worked as head of the history section at Powell’s City of Books in Portland.
Sarah Petersen JD was named the director of alumni relations and recent graduate advising at Lewis & Clark Law School. Previously, she was an associate at Bullard Law. She is also treasurer of the Multnomah Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section.

2009

Levi Johnston JD received the 2012 Oregon New Lawyers Division Public Service Award from the Oregon State Bar. Johnston is an attorney with the Intelekia Law Group.

Paula Padilla JD translated two handbooks into Spanish for the Multnomah Bar Association’s Young Lawyer Section Pro Bono Committee —Youth Faces the Law: A Juvenile Rights Handbook and Domestic Violence: A Guide to Your Rights. Padilla is an attorney with Immigration Counseling Service, a nonprofit immigration law firm in Portland.

Caroline Ponzini-Beck JD was elected treasurer of the Deschutes County Bar Association for 2012–2013. She is an associate with Stahancyk, Kent & Hook in Bend, Oregon.

2010

Risa Davis JD received the Oregon New Lawyers Division Award for her dedication and pro bono service. Davis is the sole practitioner at Davis Law Offices in Portland.

2011

Debbie Maryanov JD was elected president of Oregon CIO 4, a Tualatin neighborhood citizen involvement organization. CIOs help neighborhoods communicate about safety and transportation issues, property values, and the overall economic viability of the city, as well as learn about activity in city government, local businesses, and surrounding neighborhoods.

2012

Hannah Rose Berry BA, after traveling in Thailand and Cambodia, lived in Chitwan and Pokhara, Nepal, where she taught English as a volunteer for two months through the organization Hope & Home. She then completed a three-week trek of the Annapurna Circuit before heading back to Alaska, where she is working on a house she inherited from a family friend.

Andrea Chiriboga-Flor BA was awarded the 2012 prize for the best undergraduate paper from the Society of Urban, National, and Transnational/ Global Anthropology (SUNTA). Her paper, “The Whole World is Watching: An Ethnographic Study of Spatiality, Identity, and Marginalization Within the Occupy Portland Movement,” was excerpted from her senior thesis. Her thesis advisor, Deborah Heath, associate professor of anthropology and director of the Gender Studies Program, nominated her for the award.

Hilary Cline BA is one of 1,700 U.S. citizens participating in the 2012–13 Fulbright U.S. Student Program. She is teaching English in Siberia in subarctic temperatures. “The students are so hospitable. They really make me feel like a valued member of the university,” she says. “And the staff has been very welcoming.”

Natalie Dole BA is an AmeriCorps VISTA community developer with Catholic Charities of Oregon.

Anne Gorman BA is a data specialist for National Public Radio in Washington, D.C.

2013

Brienne Carpenter BA ’08, JD is a new board member with Portland State University’s Center for Women, Politics, and Policy.

Lisa Farrell JD won third place in the American Bar Association’s 2012 Mendes Hershman student writing contest for her capstone paper, “A Step in the Right Direction: Regulation of Debit Card Center Change Fees in the Durbin Amendment.” She received an all-expensepaid trip to the ABA Annual Meeting to accept her award.

Matthew Merryman JD received the Volunteer of the Year Award at the annual conference of the National Crime Victim Law Institute in honor of his efforts to protect, enforce, and advance victim’s rights. A third-year law student, Merryman has extensive experience and interest in criminal law.
