Guest speaker: Roméo Dallaire, Canadian senator and retired lieutenant general, who led the U.N. peacekeeping mission to Rwanda in 1994. His book on the experience, Shake Hands With the Devil: The Failure of Rwanda (Da Capo Press, 2004), has garnered numerous international literary awards and was the basis of a full-length feature film. Dallaire now speaks on issues relating to human rights and genocide prevention as well as post-traumatic stress disorder.

Guest speaker: Erwin Chemerinsky, dean and distinguished professor of law at the University of California’s Irvine School of Law. Chemerinsky is an expert in constitutional law, federal practice, civil rights and civil liberties, and appellate litigation. He is the author of seven books, most recently, The Conservative Assault on the Constitution (Simon & Schuster, 2010). He frequently argues cases before the nation’s highest courts and also serves as a commentator on legal issues for national and local media.

 


Graduate School of Education and Counseling

Degrees awarded: Ed.D., Ed.S. in Advanced Leadership, Ed.S. in Administration, Ed.S. in School Psychology, MEd, MAT, and master’s degrees in addiction studies; community counseling; marriage, couple and family therapy; professional mental health counseling; professional mental health counseling–addiction; and psychological and cultural studies.

Guest speaker: Pedro Noguera, the Peter L. Agnew Professor of Education at New York University. Noguera is an urban sociologist whose scholarship and research focuses on the ways in which schools are influenced by social and economic conditions in the urban environment. He is also executive director of the Metropolitan Center for Urban Education and the codirector of the Institute for the Study of Globalization and Education in Metropolitan Settings.
