Reporter spends night in Lewis & Clark residence hall

As part of her Sleeping in Portland series, Oregonian reporter Janet Eastman spent the night in Edna Holmes Hall, the newest residence hall on the Lewis & Clark campus.
Holmes Hall, which holds LEED gold certification, impressed Eastman with its energy reduction technology, including automatic switches that turn down the heat when windows are open. A campus commitment to sustainability is seen at every turn. “Recycling cans are part of the furniture in every dorm room and composting bins stand at the ready near the stainless-steel appliances in each floor’s kitchen,” Eastman said.
While the reporter appreciated Holmes Hall’s “streamlined European-style” faucets, reclaimed fir and maple furnishings, and coffee table crafted from an old car hood, she was most inspired by students’ eye for design, noting tapestries that “create a cabana-like seating environment” and art on mirrors and windows drawn with washable markers.
In the end, Eastman summed up the Lewis & Clark campus living experience as “simple, practical, fun.”
