L&C Mathematical Sciences Dept. to support girls’ Computer Science camp

February 20, 2014

For the second year in a row the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) has funded an AspireIT project that is supported by Lewis & Clark faculty members. The project involves students and a teacher at Sunset High School and several faculty members in L&C’s computer science department. The AspireIT Middle School Outreach Program supports the creation and running of computing-related outreach programs for middle school girls. Spearheaded, planned, and to be run by four Sunset High School students, and supported by their teacher Jason Galbraith and Professor of Computer Science Jens Mache, this week-long summer camp will invite 30 girls to learn about robotics, game design, app creation, and basic computer science concepts. Participants will take field trips to two corporate IT departments, which will incorporate information about careers in information technology. Dr. Mache and his colleagues will provide guidance and mentoring for the camp leaders and participants, and assist with the “Career Discovery” component of the camp.  (February 2014)
